Flynn: Son of Crimson is a charming and entertaining adventure that doesn’t necessarily revolutionise the 2D platforming genre, but still offers plenty of fun. There’s a good time to be had traversing through the challenging levels as Flynn and defeating their countless enemies, whilst it’s also satisfying to unlock new abilities along the way. Add to that the great pixel art and catchy soundtrack and it becomes clear that there really is plenty to like about the game. It is guilty of lacking originality in places and there were some parts of levels that could be a bit annoying, but Flynn: Son of Crimson is otherwise a great title that’s easy to recommend to fans of the genre.

Flynn: Son of Crimson may just look like another 2D adventure, something that there really is no shortage of in releases this year alone. But this one ranks up easily as one of the greats. Tight combat, a great soundtrack and an adventure that is short but instantly replayable. Flynn: Son of Crimson is a game that doesn’t waste your time. I don’t remember a moment where I was bored or frustrated despite playing many games like this before. It even gave me Wonder Boy vibes which is always good in my book. Plus it has one of the coolest spirit dogs in gaming. A fantastic way to top off 2021 for me and I hope you too find the time to check it out.

Flynn: Son of Crimson manages to cover a lot of ground for it's six-ish hour campaign.

Pixel platformers may be a dime a dozen, but this is a shiny sovereign. The formula may be familiar, but familiar is always a comfort. Flynn: Son of Crimson is a beautiful platforming adventure brimming with charm that will win you over no matter how many similar titles you’ve played. The gameplay is sleek, the pixels are crunchy and the story is full of heart. Every time you play, you’ll find yourself going “Just one more level. Just one more relic…”

Flynn: Son of Crimson was ultimately worth the wait. If you’re a fan of retro-inspired games that harken back to the ’90s, I’d check it out.

I would love to see another story told in this world with some further polish on the gameplay if Studio Thunderhorse was ever to make a second showing. Should the slower pace not be a bother to you, there's a lot that Flynn Son of Crimson has to offer. But amongst a sea of similar genre entries on Switch, I'd be hard pressed to recommend this one.

Underwhelming is what perfectly describes Flynn: Son of Crimson, whish is a shame, as the pixel art is top-notch (even if its forgettable) and there are no mechanical flaws to talk about. Sadly, this just isn't enjoyable, with the almost child-friendly difficulty and repetitive gameplay making it hard to remain invested throughout.

Flynn: Son of Crimson is a pleasant surprise that filled in some quiet hours this summer. It’s fun, fast, and occasionally frantic in its action, and is a good addition to any action-gamer’s library.
