OTXO is a great roguelike that’s built on the solid foundations of the genre while still being willing to deviate from some design tropes to deliver on its theme. I’m hard-pressed to think of something negative to say about the game, and while not everyone is going to love the game’s style, there is a ton to appreciate here.

OTXO gives you a sense of wanting to meet the next stage with more vigor like in the old-pixel games. Once cleared, you feel sort of proud as the levels are tough and get tougher as they progress. So give it a go and see how far you can take your run and improve your run times and scores at the end of each attempt, edging closer to victory with better results.

I like this ultraviolent delight even more than I like Hotline Miami. It took everything that worked in those beloved action games, gave players a bit more leeway with an improved health system, and dialed things up to eleven, be it with its insane soundtrack, aggro-as-hell nature, and especially its roguelike elements. They just fit in perfectly with this particular arcade-like gameplay loop.

If you’re a fan of Hotline Miami and roguelites, you owe it to yourself to add OTXO to your Steam library. While it’s true the busy visuals can occasionally lead to some frustrating deaths, and the soundtrack repeats itself a bit too often, these minor gripes are easy to overlook when you consider just how much the game does right. Offering punchy and gratifying combat, a meaty challenge, and an addicting progression system that makes each loop feel fresh and exciting as you experiment with its engrossing perk system, OTXO will kick your ass and leave you begging for more.

OTXO is a good choice for anyone who enjoys straightforward action without elaborate stories or very complex mechanics. Even without bringing anything new to the roguelite genre, the simple but still challenging gameplay is the main highlight of this indie title that uses and abuses action to provide an almost cinematic shooting experience.
