I know volleyball and dodgeball are totally different activities, but the inspiration is pretty obvious here. And if you want to play a sports game like this that’s wacky, over the top, and still has a competitive element, Mario Tennis or the Kunip-kun Dodgeball games are much more fulfilling in every way. And if you’re just a Fairy Tail fan looking for something fun to play with these characters, Fairy Tail: Dungeons or the GUST-developed RPG from a few years ago (with a sequel coming soon) are much more successful in nailing their own concepts. It’s a shame, but aside from some fun visuals and occasional on-screen wackiness, Fairy Tail: Beach Volleyball Havoc doesn’t deliver in either the volleyball or the havoc.

FAIRY TAIL: Beach Volleyball Havoc lives up to its title with plenty of havoc, but this fanservice-laden sports title isn’t quite an ace. Fans of the time-tested series will appreciate its chaos, but don’t expect to spend too much time on its shimmering sands.

FAIRY TAIL: Beach Volleyball Havoc delivers a fun and chaotic arcade volleyball experience, especially for fans of the Fairy Tail universe. With its blend of magical power-ups and recognizable characters, the game certainly has its moments of excitement. However, it ultimately feels more like a mashup of over-the-top mechanics designed to add flair to what would otherwise be a straightforward sports title. While it captures some of the whimsical energy you’d expect from a game like Mario Strikers, it doesn’t offer much beyond the novelty of crazy magical abilities and familiar faces. The gameplay lacks the depth or polish to make it truly stand out, and without a narrative to anchor the experience, it can feel a bit hollow. If you’re looking for a lighthearted, magical twist on volleyball, this game will provide some fun—but don’t expect much more than that.

FAIRY TAIL: Beach Volleyball Havoc errs especially in not offering more robust content to the players. Having only the quick match mode and lacking more depth in its mechanics will definitely leave it [restricted] to the casual side. Even so, it's way too simple even for that kind of game. Not even the Fairy Tail IP is well explored, as we only have the characters in swimsuits and theme magics. This leads to a completely uninteresting single player mode, as matches quickly become repetitive and it stops being fun. With at least one friend at your side, things change a little, as matches feel less robotic and more exciting. As it also has a low price[...], I believe it may be worth it only if you have a sibling or friend to play with frequently.

Fairy Tail: Beach Volleyball Havoc is best enjoyed as a fleeting party game, one that provides a few laughs and memorable moments with friends, but probably won't hold your attention for the long haul.

FAIRY TAIL: Beach Volleyball Havoc has a lovely pixel art summer vibe with a large roster of characters from the anime series to choose from. However, no native online play holds it back, and there are no single-player offerings besides the magic volleyball matches with AI players. On the upside, its sole mode is not only fun but keeps you coming back, thanks to the character's unique attributes and their magic spells. In short, this game may not be as grand as 2020's FAIRY TAIL or the upcoming FAIRY TAIL 2, but its arcade pick-up-and-play nature makes it a perfect companion to big games like those.

While the idea for the game was really interesting, its execution leaves much to be desired. It's hard to enjoy the gameplay when it's so frustrating that it only causes gnashing of teeth and the desire to pull hair out of your head. Almost nothing in this game works as expected. From the unintuitive menus and controls, as well as the hopeless interface, to the bland magic effects and the lack of difference in feeling when playing with different characters, to the total chaos that covers the entire screen.

There are so many shortcomings in terms of single-player mode, lack of online, and low incentive for replay outside of the fun, but I really had a great time with this and my family. We still load it up daily for a match or two before school, and I hope that more comes to make the game have better longevity for everyone.
