Sonic X Shadow Generations Reviews
Sonic x Shadow Generations stands out as one of the stronger entries dedicated to SEGA's iconic character. While Sonic Generations was already well-received at its original release, the addition of Shadow Generations rounds out the experience, making this collection appealing even to those familiar with the 2011 original. It's not just for longtime fans of the Blue Blur but also for newcomers seeking a modern adventure, especially with the characters gaining renewed popularity thanks to recent films.

I had a great time playing SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS with its modern adaptation of a genuine classic and its super-fun new campaign featuring Shadow the Hedgehog. This is such a bountiful package that any Sonic fan will absolutely love it. 🦔
Sonic X Shadow Generations is a labor of love that combines nostalgia with fresh gameplay elements. The remaster brings back beloved adventures with improved graphics, while Shadow’s story shines thanks to new abilities and excellent level design. With this game, Sega proves that the franchise still has plenty to offer even after all these years, and if it continues in this vein, we can look forward to high-quality gaming experiences in the future.

Speaking as someone who doesn't usually enjoy Sonic games, this game is phenomenal! It combines so much of what makes Sonic The Hedgehog great, with a wide range of classic Sonic, early 3D Sonic, and the franchise's future. Shadow Generations is so masterfully crafted that, with the recent successes of the Sonic The Hedgehog movies, the franchise truly is experiencing a renaissance era that suggests a bright future ahead of it.
Sonic X Shadow Generations is both a loving celebration of Sonic’s past and a genuinely exciting showcase for Shadow, turning nostalgia, speed, and replayability into one of the franchise’s best modern packages.

SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS is the best of both worlds, where you can re-experience the greatness of Sonic Generations while being able to play a new game focused on Shadow the Hedgehog. It’s a great audiovisual experience as well, as the graphics have been upgraded and feature more of the franchise’s adrenaline-pumping soundtrack. Other than remastering an already great game in its own right, it adds more story content and introduces more gameplay mechanics for our favorite anti-hero, which we definitely need more of.
Even after 13 years, Sonic Generations remains a fun and worthwhile experience. However, it's with Shadow Generations that this offering shines, offering some of the best and most enjoyable 3D levels in the entire franchise to date. Sonic X Shadow Generations is not only a beautiful celebration of the (good and bad) Sonic the Hedgehog games, but also a great glimpse into what could be a bright future for this video game series.

Sonic X Shadow Generations on the Switch 2 is a confident, satisfying package. It’s equal parts nostalgia and reinvention. The Sonic stages remind us why the series earned its legacy, while the Shadow content pushes it into darker, more exciting territory. Performance-wise, it finally runs the way it was meant to, and while there are definitely a few areas that could’ve used more polish—particularly the hub world and resolution in the Shadow portion—the overall experience is undeniably worth the ride. If you’re a longtime fan, this feels like the game Shadow always deserved.
”That blue hedgehog again, of all places!”

As with all Sonic games, you get what you expect. Fast-paced, frantic action with a little dash of challenge. Sonic X Shadow Generations is no different. The game comes to Switch 2 with a mixed experience. Fortunately, the Sonic version of the game more than makes up for the inadequacies of the Ultimate Life Form. Sonic X Shadow Generations receives the Thumb Culture Gold Award.
Sonic X Shadow Generations is an excellent version of the remake, but it adds little for its Switch 2 release.
Of course, the music and voice acting is all great, it pretty much always is in Sonic games, and its quality is definitely not lost in the transition to the Nintendo Switch 2. Honestly, this might be the first time since playing the original Sonic games on my 3DS that playing Sonic handheld has felt so this good, this absolutely polished. Fast-paced levels mixed with being able to play in bursts in handheld mode. This might be a decade-old title, but it’s almost like this game had been originally crafted with the Switch 2 in mind, almost in a savant-like manner.
It runs well and it looks great, and it gives hope that, at least for the next little while, Switch 2 ports won’t require you to make a few allowances for subpar performance.
Playing Sonic X Shadow Generations, I loved the experience. However, I felt awful for Nintendo fans, who were treated to a subpar version of the latest 3D Sonic adventure. Following a bad port of Sonic Frontiers and a lackluster version of Sonic Colors Ultimate, more powerful hardware was needed to offer the ideal Sonic experience. Now we have that hardware, Nintendo fans can finally enjoy a fantastic 3D Sonic experience on the go. I cannot recommend Sonic X Shadow Generations enough if you have never experienced this high-speed adventure.
The biggest difficulty in evaluating this version lies in a decision that has little to do with the gaming experience. For some reason, SEGA decided not to adopt the “upgrade” system for games that are already available on the first Nintendo Switch and receive the “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition”. In other words, if you paid full price for the game when it was released on the first Switch, if you want to see the graphical improvements on the new console, you will have to pay full price again.

Sonic gets overshadowed by his brooding counterpart Shadow in this remaster of 2011's excellent Sonic Generations. The game does have some problems unique to the Nintendo Switch 2, but aside from that it's still a solid entry in the library of Sonic games.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Sonic x Shadow Generations is superb with crisp visuals and locked 60 FPS gameplay that doesn't skip a beat or frame. The game offers two fun and compelling campaigns full of content in Sonic Generations and Shadow Generations that will keep new fans and completionists coming back for more. However, there's no upgrade path from the original Switch version, so you'll have to pay for the Switch 2 version in full.
SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS is a solid remaster with some high-quality extra content that elevates the whole package. It's not a must-have if you've already played the original or aren't interested in Shadow, but if you're a fan of the hedgehog or have never tried it, it's an excellent opportunity to discover—or rediscover—one of the best modern titles in the series. As for the Nintendo Switch 2 version, we were hoping for a bit more, but if you haven't played it before, it's still a very valid option to enjoy it on Nintendo's new hybrid.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is a fantastic collection of quality content that beautifully celebrates the legendary journey of the blue hedgehog. All complimented by one of the best modern 3D Sonic / Shadow adventures to date with fast-paced tracks, intriguing story, a compelling overworld and a wonderful aesthetic. The lack of full HDR when docked and a true upgrade path between Switch 1 to Switch 2 is a bit disappointing, but this is a wonderful first point of entry for a truly excellent game that anyone with history with the Hedgehog must experience.
While the Sonic portion of the game is starting to show its age, there’s still plenty of fun to be had revisiting classic zones and taking on Eggman once again. It’s the Shadow adventure though that is the true standout. Polished, exhilarating and clearly made with a real love for the character, Shadow Generations is a fantastically fun time and turns Sonic X Shadow Generations into a must for fans of the series and platforming fans alike.
