Captain Blood would already be an average game if it had been released in its original era. The combat is unpolished, the level design is repetitive, there's constant reuse of enemies, and the ship battles aren't exciting. At the very least, the pirate aesthetic combined with the more cartoonish design gives it a charming and unique touch that still stands out even after all these years.

Captain Blood is a curious relic, a patchwork resurrection of an era long past, one that struggles to find relevance in the present. Its brute-force combat and nostalgic appeal might offer fleeting moments of blood-soaked joy, but the weight of its technical flaws and repetitive design quickly quashes any sense of lasting engagement. It’s a game that wants to be remembered for its swagger, but instead, it’s a reminder of how games like this were left behind for good reason.

Captain Blood is a bold, brash hack-and-slash with heart—but it’s more Saturday morning cartoon than high-seas epic. If you’re in the mood for a bite-sized pirate brawl with exaggerated flair and old-school charm, it’s worth boarding. Just don’t expect a deep treasure chest underneath all that glitter.

The publisher argues that while Captain Blood might rate as a 4/10 today, it would’ve scored a 7.5/10 back in the mid-2000s. But let’s be honest—even if this game had launched on its original schedule, it would’ve still been panned. Broken mechanics don’t magically become acceptable just because they’re old. As someone who values game preservation, I respect the effort to revive lost projects, but that doesn’t excuse selling a fundamentally unfinished product—especially one that may never be properly fixed. Dodge Captain Blood like your character dodges non-existent i-frames.

Captain Blood's fascinating history makes its faults as endearing as they are annoying, but the act of playing it is surprisingly dull. Still, it is worth checking out for any game history enthusiast.

I wanted to like Captain Blood. A throwback title without the modern faff that comes with so many newer releases was refreshing…Still, Captain Blood’s lacking design and poor tuning make it an absolute chore to play through.

I had a fun time with Captain Blood even if it’s clearly dated. For a forgotten game that should have been released back during the end of the Bush administration, the idea still feels fresh to this day. A pirate-themed God of War clone was appealing back then, and still is now. Just bear in mind the quality of life enhancements you’d expect from the 2020s aren’t featured in this game, and that it wouldn’t have even been a masterpiece for its intended generation of consoles.
