A relatively accessible rail simulator that pays homage to Thomas and his friends. I would strongly recommend IF you are already familiar with Dovetail's previous rail simulators - but only cautiously recommend if you are a Thomas & Friends fan looking for a more traditional gameplay mechanics.

A chill train experience alongside Thomas and friends

At first, Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor really hits that sweet spot. Sodor feels comforting, the sights and sounds are exactly what you want. There is a simple joy in pretending you are a very useful engine with everything under control. Even as things start to fade, I still found myself enjoying parts of it. There is a charm here that keeps you going, even when it feels a bit rough around the edges. It just about does enough to stay on track, and I was glad to take the journey. That said, the cracks do start to show. The gameplay never really evolves and the world feels a little underdeveloped. It’s stuck between being a proper simulation and a simpler experience. It is enjoyable in small doses, but it never quite pushes itself as far as it could have. It’s a nostalgic ride that doesn’t quite go the distance before stopping short, but I’m still glad I climbed aboard. And so I am giving Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor the Thumb Culture Silver Award.

Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor is exactly what it looks like. A simple, calm, and approachable game set in a familiar world. It doesn’t try to surprise you, and it doesn’t try to challenge you. Instead, it focuses on being easy to play and easy to enjoy. For its target audience, that’s probably the right decision. Yes, it can feel repetitive. Yes, it doesn’t have a lot of depth. But it also delivers a consistent, relaxed experience that’s hard to find in more demanding games. For kids and fans of the series, it’s a great fit. For everyone else, it depends on what you’re in the mood for. If you want something light and low-stress, it does the job. And sometimes, that’s more than enough.

There’s so much to love in Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor, but the game design means you’ll be sitting through the same sequences over and over, because of the slightest infractions, and the camera-freezing bug is a little too constant to be ignored. Honestly, if the game just had a slightly looser vibe in terms of mechanics, the cut scenes were skippable, and that pesky camera freeze bug was gone... this would be a full-throated recommendation. To be honest, I can imagine if I had covered this game three months down the line when some patches have been added, it would be a very different experience. But as it stands, this is a flawed gem for fans of the cheery engine.

Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor definitely has heart, skill, and a real sense of purpose, which is what makes it one of the most interesting licensed releases in recent memory.

Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor is a charming, nostalgic, and surprisingly engaging experience that captures the magic of the series beautifully. It may not offer the deepest gameplay systems, and repetition can creep in over time, but the warmth of the world and the connection it creates more than make up for it. This is more than just a game for kids. It’s a journey back to something familiar — something comforting — and something genuinely magical. A magical and nostalgic journey that proves Thomas & Friends isn’t just for kids — it’s an experience that resonates across generations.

Despite being a bit basic and lacking some polish, Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor is a nostalgic love letter to a childhood favourite.

I struggle to understand who is Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor for. Kids won’t have the patience to learn about a complex training simulator, and will ragequit almost immediately once they face unskippable cutscenes, poorly explained mechanics, and a plethora of mission-breaking bugs. Older fans of modern train simulators already have access to the vastly more polished Train Sim World series to begin with. I tried to see this game as something aimed at a more specific demographic, but this is just too clunky and too poorly made. I had a miserable time with Wonders of Sodor, and doubt I’ll be the only one sharing this opinion.

Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor greatly surpassed my expectations. While it plays on nostalgia, the core gameplay is a full-on simulator that is a railfan's dream come true! With a massive amount of content that takes hundreds of hours to complete, this package offers much more than meets the eye and should not be overlooked. It is also a great title for children to watch, though parents will definitely need to be the ones behind the controls.
