Torneko's Mystery Dungeon retains the tense, methodical appeal of classic roguelikes, with satisfying resource management and meaningful risk. Its straightforward systems, thin narrative progression, and demanding structure may feel dated, but modern quality-of-life options and a faithful Switch 2 presentation make it an engaging archival release.

Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is a tough old-school roguelike that still knows how to keep you coming back for one more run, even when the RNG has it out for you. The retro presentation holds up nicely, but the sluggish combat and some seriously punishing luck can make the descent feel like an uphill battle, even when you’re going down.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is a fun and, above all, intriguing game. Even though I'm not a big fan of roguelikes, I quickly understood what made its formula so interesting and why Mystery Dungeon has continued to exist for so many decades. [...] At the same time, Classic HD never ceases to feel like a 1993 game receiving a new presentation. I don't necessarily see this as a problem, but it's something that needs to be considered before purchase. Its simplicity is part of its charm, just as its difficulty and repetitive structure are part of the package.

Mystery Dungeon has moved onto greener pastures since its first outing, but much of that success was owed to a surprisingly solid first outing. Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is an alright look at its humble beginnings. While the overall quality of the port is in need of some elbow grease (particularly in the audiovisual department), a good English localization and generally fun gameplay make it a worthwhile endeavor for any Mystery Dungeon aficionados. The focus on collecting money and rare items is genuinely still a unique factor even when taking the broader franchise into consideration, and although this doesn’t smooth over its relatively thin novelty, a short runtime at least means that it won’t risk becoming too stale. I would not say that this is essential for anyone other than diehards, but I definitely had fun experiencing the ups and downs, the trials and errors, and the great sense of victory that comes with Mystery Dungeon.

Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is at its best when every step feels like a small gamble. Its enemies, exploration, and constant curiosity about the next floor kept pulling me back, even if sluggish controls and inventory management often got in the way.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is the perfect way to experience the game that popularized the roguelike structure in Japan, featuring improvements that don't detract from the original experience but instead smooth out the gameplay itself.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon may have some bumpy parts that are tough to revisit all these years of iteration later, but it serves as a pleasant enough adventure and a fascinating piece of gaming history. I hope the next couple of Torneko games follow suit, as I’d love to have an excuse to see how each subsequent game builds on the last. Plus, I’ll never say no to more official releases of the past Dragon Quest games that the West missed out on.

Sure, it has aged poorly in a few areas, but the core gameplay remains just as entertaining more than three decades later. This charming game absolutely nails that “just one more run” feeling that every roguelike strives for, yet surprisingly few manage to perfect.
