Dreadline Express

Critic Reviews for Dreadline Express
If you're alone this Halloween and fancy having a nice quiet evening to yourself while avoiding kids dressed as KPOP singers on the hunt for confectionary treats and human blood, you could do much worse than dimming the lights, brewing a hot coffee, firing up Dreadline Express, and having a big old sigh. Uuuuugh.
Dreadline Express is a very pleasant horror surprise that can be recommended to all fans of Lovecraftian games. This train may not travel through the bitter cold of winter, but the journey itself is certainly capable of leaving a lasting impression.

Dreadline Express is an intriguing narrative experience, a debut title with a distinct personality that stands out above all for its atmosphere and the curiosity it sparks in the player, prompting them to explore alternative paths and seek answers even after the credits roll. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always live up to its potential as it should, with ambitious premises that never quite come into full bloom.

Overall, Dreadline Express is a very good game with an oppressive atmosphere that's sustained by its visual and audio presentation throughout. As someone who appreciates well-crafted narrative, I also really enjoyed the worldbuilding and characters—the dialogues are sharp and precisely written. Unfortunately, the cumbersome card dialogue mechanic breaks my immersion every single time with frustratingly frequent inputs. Especially in a game with such dense atmospheric storytelling, it's all the more disappointing to be pulled out of the experience by annoying—and avoidable—moments like these.

Dreadline Express is a wonderfully atmospheric psychological horror adventure that stands out thanks to its inventive card-based deduction system and unsettling PS1-inspired visuals. Its claustrophobic setting, intriguing characters, and freedom to uncover the mystery at your own pace make for a genuinely engaging experience. Unfortunately, finding the right card combinations becomes frustrating towards the end, while the underwhelming conclusion fails to deliver a truly memorable payoff. Despite these shortcomings, Dreadline Express remains one of the most interesting Czech indie games of the year.
