The first huge DLC of The Division lives up to the hype by recreating perfectly New York's underground and improving the combat system. The tension is always present in this setting and Ubisoft has given us one of their best DLC, which gives more life to The Division.

All things considered, “Underground” is a true evolution of the MMO, provided those who had a passing interest in it can be bothered jumping back in.

After I had completed a majority of the content I thought that I was done with The Division but the Underground DLC has managed to rope me back into spending a few hours a day levelling up and accruing loot in a far more enjoyable manner than that offered by the Dark Zone.

With its customizable missions and randomly generated areas, Underground's Operations breathe new life into an ailing game.

Underground is most valuable to those who are already the most devoted Division fans, although if you’re willing to put in some hours, there’s nothing to stop you joining their number.

Overall, The Division: Underground is a great new way to play Tom Clancy’s The Division, and brings about a new sense of frenzied non-stop fighting and action that wasn’t always present in the slower story mission. The new loot and the constant rate it drops at keeps you willing to jump into the grind and makes you feel powerful. However, if you are a solo player or face a lot of network issues, you will likely be frustrated as you lose operations due to lag and cheap enemy deaths as enemies’ spawn behind you.

As it stands, if you were expecting The Division: Underground to do to the game what The Taken King did for Destiny, you're in for a massive disappointment. With no meaningful additions to its lore, it's a slog that tries to play up the game's great combat but does very little to make the proceedings feel perceptively different. Unless you have a ton of friends still playing it, you're better of avoiding the first expansion to The Division.

Underground delivers a streamlined Division experience, but nothing new enough to warrant the grind that comes with it.

A poor first expansion to Ubisoft's floundering shooter. They must do better.

The Division's Underground is the polar opposite of Diablo 3's Reaper of Souls. It exposes the game's snail-slow progression and endless grind while still presenting the Dark Zone as having the best rewards. New players will probably enjoy the new content with the base game but it's a toss-up for the hardcore.

'The Underground' is worth trying out if you’ve committed to a pass, but certainly not worth buying on its own.
