The problem with Super Bomberman R, as a fun but limited local multiplayer game you've played many times before, is its hefty price tag.

Super Bomberman R has already launched for the new systems and you have the ability to snag it now for the price of 39.99 USD for all platforms except Nintendo Switch, where it is still 49.99. You will have hours of fun with friends or family, even by yourself. Recommended!

Super Bomberman R is far too pricey for what it offers, especially considering that the online multiplayer suffered from lag issues during our tests. This is still a decent Bomberman game, a decent launch game and a very good multiplayer game, but it is neither as appealing if played alone nor one of the best games in the long lasting franchise.

Fun, but far from an explosive reinvention.

After seven years of nothingness for the White Bomber, it's a serviceable but unadventurous return to form.

There are better, cheaper, and less broken versions of Bomberman out there.

Super Bomberman R is a good, not great, return for the franchise. It’s charming in its retro gameplay, but also a bit disappointing that the first new game in a decade does little to push the IP forward.

The in-game currency decision was a head scratcher, as it adds an unwelcome grinding element to much of the gameplay. If you can look past that, then there's a decent campaign and the same addictive multiplayer Bomberman is known for sitting at this launch title's explosive core.

If you want Super Bomberman R for the occasional good time blasting your friends and family around the television, then it is worth considering, but only down the road when the price drops significantly.

It's been awhile since a Bomberman game has graced a Nintendo console and it's good to see the franchise make a comeback, even if it stays a little too true to its original format. However if you're looking for a solo-experience, I would recommend another title but if you're looking for some multiplayer fun for local or online play, Bomberman R delivers on that front and is a great way to spend an hour or so blowing your friends, family and colleagues to smithereens.

If you've got the friends (and controllers) and you got an extra $50 burning a hole in your pocket, you might have an incredibly fun party game on your hands. I still personally feel that $50 is a bit high, so if you're the patient type, then waiting for

Visually it has charm, and its soundtrack teeters on the line between repetitive and infectiously catchy. It's the gameplay that's the real hook though, and there's plenty of it as long as you have friends to play with. If you don't, well, you'll find Super Bomberman R rather limited.

Super Bomberman R is a great return to Bomberman, but doesn't push the series forward.

Super Bomberman R doesn’t do anything incredibly unique as far as the series is concerned. Fans of Bomberman will want to pick it up though, since its still a rip-roaring good time with friends.

If it weren't plagued with issues, Super Bomberman R would be a fine return to the PC for the series. Both the campaign and the multiplayer lack the flourishes that make some of the older entries memorable, but the core gameplay still holds up enough to remain enjoyable for newcomers and more casual players of the series. You have to treat the game as a local multiplayer title instead of an online one and hope you don't get hit with controller issues. Considering both the price point and the fact that other indie titles have already run with this concept to a much better execution, however, your best bet is to check out the game once it goes on sale or has a good price drop.

Super Bomberman R is a fun multiplayer game that offers a traditional story mode that is incredibly short in length. As a result, it is hard to recommend it for a purely single-player experience. Despite offering online multiplayer, it is still a wonky implementation which makes it best suited for local multiplayer.

Super Bomberman R gives the player many hours of fun... in the multiplayer. The story mode is fun and the controls are simple and easy to learn and dominate, which only adds to its success as a local multiplayer game, even if it doesn't do much more than that.

As nice as it is to see a long-dormant retro series return, Super Bomberman R's lack of creativity and unbalance issues result in it not feeling like the proper comeback it could have been.

For a 50 Dollar game, Super Bomberman R does not justify its value for money in the small content it has. Even with a pretty fun multi-player modes, it still has an expensive price point for a game in this age.

An enjoyable game both cooperatively and competitively, with a cheerful 90's style look and feel and a decent enough amount of content. The simplicity and slight repetitiveness of the campaign, and the competitive mode not shaking up the formula makes it a game aimed more at series veterans than newcomers.
