In the end, Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII is a rock-solid title, but it could have been so much more. Forcing it to fit under the Black Ops moniker was a mistake, and comes across as forced, given its very light relation to the previous three titles. The whole thing smacks of Treyarch wanting to take risks and go in new directions, but stopping just shy and instead tacking older characters or ideas. Longtime fans of the franchise won't want to miss out on this - especially those who love the Zombies experience - but those who checked out of Call of Duty before likely won't find enough here to bring them back.

Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII delivers the same tactile experience that it always has across three enticing modes.

With a rich multiplayer mode, a great zombie experience and a battle royale that was able to differentiate from the others, BO4 is a really needed fresh start for the franchise. While everything looks great, the absence of a campaign mode, alongside the technical problems and the abundant presence of microtransaction, really hurt the final score.

Black Ops 4 is the biggest change to the formula in recent Call of Duty history, and in large part is for the better. Blackout is a suitable replacement for the single player campaign, zombies has seen meaningful changes to its meta-game, and multiplayer is more of the same great thing.

Call Of Duty is a franchise that has almost always stuck to its set formula. That abruptly changes with Black Ops 4 and the end result is better for it. The Blackout mode comes across as the evolution of not only the Battle Royale genre, but also the Call Of Duty franchise as a whole. The accessible mode is accompanied by familiar and improved aspects, such as the multi-layered Zombie mode and a competitive multiplayer that finally feels competitive again. You may forget that Call Of Duty ever needed a single player campaign at all.

Black Ops 4 is one of the best and enjoyable all-in multiplayer experiences out there right now and arguably the best COD in a good many years.

Aside from some admittedly minor gripes and the typically icky post-launch content malarkey, Black Ops IIII is an undeniably appealing multiplayer gaming package. Blackout is a faster and more dynamic battle royale mode than the reigning PUBG and Fortnite; the arena mode has changed in ways that encourage team play, and strategy and Zombies is still a joy, just with more customisation. Black Ops IIII is like your dad’s favourite brand of beer that finally brought out a bolder tasting summer brew; familiar, reliable and now interesting enough for you to accept that you will one day die. Or something.

Treyarch new approach to the Black Ops franchise is a hit and miss. Without a doubt is a great FPS and the inclusion of Blackout is a great idea to mix things up, but the lack of campaign definitely affects the whole package since it may have interesting characters, but leaves them no ground to explore or grow.

Improving what it's done time and time and time and time again with a sexier (read: crasser) coat of paint thrown on it. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 does exactly what it says on the tin — that is, not very much of anything new or different.

If you're only here for the campaign, there's no reason for you to buy Black Ops 4. But if you're a multiplayer gamer and enjoy battle royale games, there's plenty of great, addictive content to keep you playing for months on end.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 features arguably the best multiplayer and co-op experience in the series thanks to the addition of Blackout to its highly polished staple of Zombies and regular multiplayer modes. It even adds split-screen play at a time when such a feature has become rare. At the same time, the excellent online modes make the lack of a campaign mode even more regrettable. The addition of a solid campaign mode could have made this the best COD game to date. As it is now, this one’s for multiplayer lovers only.

While it's nice to see Treyarch "change-up" the formula, in the largest quotations possible, this is still a limp-wristed attempt. It's a pathetic husk of the once-great Call of Duty series that fails to be worth the money or time.

I can really say that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 provides the best multiplayer experience in the franchise, and it's not going to be a surprise when the next iteration is going to focus even more on this aspect.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, the fifteenth iteration of a storied Call of Duty franchise, blends old and new to put itself in the upper echelon of Call of Duty games. Despite its lack of a traditional campaign, the game impresses in plenty of other aspects. The newcomer mode, Blackout, puts a fun and compelling Call of Duty spin on the battle royale genre. Multiplayer's boots find the ground again and take me all the way back to my fondest memories of the original Black Ops. Although it's not historically my favorite type of mode, Zombies really kicks it up a notch, with more maps and customization than ever before (not to mention even crazier Easter Eggs).

Treyarch have jumped fully on board the Battle Royale bandwagon, but not content with that, have jumped into the drivers seat and changed up a gear to give the best and most fun version of the genre. If fast and varied action and plenty of firepower is what you want, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is going to be right up your street.

Call of Duty Black Ops IIII revitalizes the annual shooter by dropping the traditional campaign and focusing more on the cooperative multiplayer, from a trio of distinct Zombies experiences to one of the best takes on Battle Royale to date.
