In a bizarre and completely unprecedented move, PlayStation has announced that it's ceasing physical disc releases and going completely digital from January 2028.
As the digital-only release of Grand Theft Auto 6, the biggest game in the world, proved to us all last week, physical media is becoming something of a rarity in this current console generation. Collector's editions have become noticeably less present in the past few months, and certain companies have made it clear that they're more interested in digital releases.
Well, it looks like we can add PlayStation to that growing list, and it's made what is easily the most troubling and definitive statement on physical releases that we've seen so far. From January 2028, the company is going to be entirely ceasing physical disc production and moving to digital releases only.
Over on the PlayStation Blog, a post was shared that announced a massively depressing update on the state of physical releases, as PlayStation confirmed that it's ending physical disc production for PlayStation games from January 2028 and going entirely digital. This is "in response to shifting trends in consumer preference", and definitely not just a money-saving tactic, no sir.
