Nintendo Enthusiast's Reviews

Honestly, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for the 3DS is not a terrible game, but it's not good either. It's just kind of….there. Nothing about the game is really satisfying, nothing about the game stands out, and poor and lazy design choices make it feel much more like a cash-grab than a full fledged experience. Hopefully the Wii U version has some more polish and features, because the 3DS version falls very flat and doesn't even earn a bronze medal.

Wave One of the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Expansion Pass is now available, which includes the Pulse of the Ancients DLC. Wave Two, Guardian of Remembrance, is expected to launch sometime in November.

When remaking something that is hard on an old console, developers should try to fix any unfair elements while keeping the spirit of the original alive. If you don't bother to touch those things up, you'll end up with mediocrity, time and again. Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX is just that. While the title looks stunning, has nostalgic collectibles to gather, and includes a Classic Mode and Boss Rush Mode as extras, all that extra fluff means nothing if the game itself is fundamentally broken. Ah, what could have been.

In the end, Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is a mediocre game. Uninspired level design, frustrating movement controls, and permanently missable power-ups all contribute to a lackluster experience. When I think the best part of the title is the cute butt dance Asha does when she opens a chest, you know things are bad. Just play Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap or Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom instead.

Gear. Club Unlimited 2 needs to be parked in a garage and just left there. If Eden really wants to turn this into something, head back to the blueprints and build something that can really compete. Otherwise, just take a detour.

5.5 / 10.0 - Ultracore
Jul 16, 2020

Granted, you could memorize levels through a lot of trial and error and become an Ultracore master. But for me at least, it's not worth the time and effort.

Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise is charmingly awful and will stand out as a morbid curiosity among the pantheon of Nintendo Switch exclusives. As a sequel, it stays true to the original by accidentally inheriting its almost exact flaws. In certain aspects it’s better, and in others it’s much worse. I found the combat to be more palatable while the performance and glitches were difficult to stomach.

5.5 / 10.0 - Evan's Remains
Jun 20, 2020

The narrative of Evan's Remains — if you don't skip any of it — probably takes up half the total playtime, if not even more. The puzzles themselves, of which there are maybe 20-25, take around two hours to complete. So honestly, I can't call the game a bad value at only $6.99, considering the price of a movie ticket these days. But there is just little here to recommend otherwise. The puzzles are fun enough, but the storytelling won't be to everyone's tastes. It definitely never strummed my heartstrings.

Stone is a weird game by every stretch of the imagination. What’s present isn’t bad — it just could have been a lot better.

5.5 / 10.0 - Trancelation
Apr 8, 2020

Trancelation is neither a powerful language-learning tool nor a particularly exciting arcade experience. But if you're looking for a supplement to a language you're already learning, and for some reason Duolingo isn't enough for you, this game will help you with rote memorization of basic vocabulary.

Let’s be clear — if your age is in double digits and you’re not a fan of the show, you probably won’t enjoy Gigantosaurus the Game. That said, it’s not really aimed at you. I have young children who are fans of the show, and they enjoyed this game.

My hope for Ackk Studios is that they will take this criticism to heart in their next project. They are clearly bursting with creativity, and we need to see more of that in the gaming industry. Just be sure to back it up with solid mechanics that push the player’s experience forward. Being set in 1999 doesn’t mean we have to suffer through the worst of it.

There's so much potential with Warriors Orochi 4; unfortunately, the latest installment misses the mark on so many of the shots that it takes.

5.5 / 10.0 - Slam Land
Aug 6, 2018

When you take a step back and look at the bigger picture, Slam Land is a local-only party game with a genuinely likable art style and a great concept. The audio is bouncy, fun, and accompanies the game's overall feel. Other than that, it really doesn't have much else going for it.

My first dive into the game left a really sour taste in my mouth. There was a broken AI system that simply did not allow me to get gold in any of the races in order to unlock the rest of the characters. Most of them are generic in design, minus a few interesting ones with special attacks.

Overall, Minecraft on New 3DS is exactly what I imagined it to be: a portable version of a game we've all played several times. If you're in the market for a portable version of Minecraft, just get it on Nintendo's newest system, the Switch.

5.5 / 10.0 - 3Souls
Oct 27, 2017

3Souls is a short but solid game. The puzzle setup has potential, but was lacking in execution and accessibility options. Even though it took three hours to complete, I would still recommend it for those who want to give this game a try.

Paranautical Activity isn’t a bad game, it is just is very flawed. Sadists and FPS fans looking for something quirky and somewhat enjoyable might get a little amusement out of the game, but it’s hard to recommend it with these glaring issues for most gamers.
