Ultimately, Rainbow Six Extraction is two conflicting games; a realistic shooter that clashes with fantastical (and dull) science fiction game and they just don’t go together. It’s clear the intention is to dole out progress slowly in hopes of players continuing to replay missions over and over to unlock more operators, maps and content. But for that to be viable the game has to be fun. And Rainbow Six Extraction just doesn’t offer anywhere close to the addictive fun (or fun at all) something like this needs to have in order to thrive.

Rainbow Six Extraction's ridiculous plot and repetitive nature prevent the experimental spinoff from achieving its full potential.

Rainbow Six Extraction might be one of the most trite co-op shooters of recent memory. Testament to the fact that making an enjoyable PvE shooter is a little harder than simply rehashing a seasonal event, it's hard to see where the effort went. Shallow, scant, and lacking any soul whatsoever, it's as bland as the black goo that adorns its promotional material.

"Extraction is a game that was clearly stuck in development hell for a reason. Ubisoft eventually came to the realization that it was time to get this game out the door, and the result is a jumbled pile of ideas you’ve seen before, executed in a wildly uninteresting way."

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction game offers a good co-op experience, but it quickly loses its luster and needs a variety of missions, perhaps in the future the game will offer more missions and characters and try be a distinct experience.

Rainbow Six Extraction is clearly not for most casual gamers. In fact, I would go so far to say that it feels like it's built for hardcore players only. Unless Ubisoft plans to massively tweak difficulty settings and play styles in the near future, Rainbow Six Extraction could end up being one of those titles that get lost between the couch cushions.

Rainbow Six Extraction is a mixed bag of good ideas and weak implementations. It’s unfortunate that the bad manages to outweigh the good, because underneath it all, Rainbow Six Extraction's gameplay approach holds promise. It’ll be interesting to see how Ubisoft supports this title in the weeks and months to come, but it’s really hard to see how it can fix a lot of core issues within the game.

More than any other studio, Ubisoft is willing to mutate its existing IPs until they scarcely resemble what they once were.

While it has a few nice ideas, Rainbow Six Extraction is nonetheless a generic first-person shooter that feels more like an expansion, rather than a full-blooded game. I’m not entirely sure Tom Clancy would approve.

The co-op PvE shooter has entered something of a renaissance recently, particularly thanks to the success of Back 4 Blood, although whether or not Extraction has the staying power to sustain an active community remains to be seen. Exploiting the popularity of the Siege universe is a canny move, but for every Left 4 Dead (still going strong) there's an Evolve (now long defunct). Extraction's high difficulty, even on the easiest setting, walks a fine line between alienating casual players and giving hardcore survival fans something to chew on. But the enduring familiarity of its specialists gives it a fighting chance.

Some will hate this game; others will love it. That's how it goes, and in the case of Rainbow Six Extraction, it's all the more apparent. The potentially fast-approaching stereotype may put many players off, while others will love the accessible gameplay loop. Meanwhile, the game's style forces you to try all the operators' work brilliantly. The whole game works brilliantly. It's a shame that it flaunts the name Rainbow Six, which doesn't suit it given the subject matter, and that it shows some graphical age, mainly due to the seven-year-old Rainbow Six Siege on which it's based.

Rainbow Six Extraction has a solid concept and fun underlying gameplay, but there are flaws in that the levels can feel same-y and the experience when playing with random players is not the best. But if you're a Rainbow Six Siege fan and are looking for something to play with friends, Extraction is worth considering.

Once you leave the world of Extraction, it’s very hard to muster up the enthusiasm to go back in. Sure, there’s an endless cycle of parasitic aliens invading, but I know that no matter how much time I put in, the reward for doing a good job is just going to be more work to do.

We can’t recommend Rainbow Six Extraction if you’re planning on playing alone, especially on PlayStation platforms where you’re expected to pay £40 for the privilege, but if your regular gaming group is bored of the game you play every night, and they all have Game Pass, Extraction will provide laughs.

Rainbow Six Extraction more or less feels like a big expansion, rather than a full game. There simply isn't enough variety in the gameplay, while the scale feels way too small as well. The inclusion of cooperative play softens the blow a little, and the shooting is a lot of fun. With that being said, there is just barely enough here to justify the price tag.

Extraction could have made much more sense as an add-on or expansion pack for Siege, not a full fledged standalone release with almost full price and no improvements whatsoever over an already great game.

Rainbow Six Extraction has some good foundational ideas that aren’t able to flourish in their own game due to its extensive repetition and misaligned progression system.

Ubisoft's PvE shooter fails to extract the best out of Rainbow Six Siege's gameplay mechanics, and the result is a repetitive, mostly bland co-op assignment.

In its current state, Rainbow Six Extraction feels like an excellent expansion pack to Rainbow Six Siege, or the starting point of a free-to-play game with a bright future. But I just don’t believe the content in Extraction currently justifies its high upfront cost, especially when you have to spend even more money to unlock cosmetic items.
