Civilization VII is undoubtedly the most divisive instalment in the series to date. Removing the classic formula of play for the new Age system is a bold stroke that, for the most part, does pay off for the series. It rebalances the gameplay to make it more approachable for a wider audience pool – feeling surprisingly comfortable on controller – gives players more chance of winning conditions in a gameplay style that feels appropriate for them, and the objective based system really diversifies each playthrough to make it unique. However, some UI issues, lack of a classic mode offered and a shortened end date than expected mean this one isn’t going to be what everyone wants, even if it’s mostly, the Civ you know and love.

Sid Meier's Civilization VII succeeds in bringing a more accessible 4X experience for new players by simplifying some core mechanics that previously pushed away many newcomers to the genre. However, the new era system has brought with it a series of issues for campaign progression, making them repetitive and overshadowing the other positive aspects of the game.

Bold changes in direction and mechanics culminate in a mixed result for Sid Meier's Civilization VII. The thrill of outwitting your opponents and seeing your chosen society thrive is alive and kicking, but the fragmented nature of the ages mechanic and issues with non-military paths to success undermine the foundation of this societal evolution.

Sid Meier's Civilization VII brings a breath of fresh air, introducing many new features to its gameplay. We're not entirely convinced by the new leader and nation management, which we would have preferred to have been limited to custom games. In addition, there is still a lot of content missing, especially from the Modern Era.

Overall, Sid Meier's Civilization VII is not a bad game and is, perhaps, a good starting point for new players to the series or even the genre. With a lot of "buts"...

Ultimately, Civilization VII feels like a safe bet. It’s a game where the additions are best for new players, and there’s not much new that returning players would care about. A lot of the changes feel like they exist simply for the sake of changing things up. Firaxis is aware that there are issues with the game, and successive patches have improved already since launch. Sid Meier’s Civilization VII introduces some interesting new ideas, streamlines the tech tree, and gives more control to city settlement and growth. It push the boundaries of the genre make it a refinement, not a revolution. In time this can be a great game, but for now, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is simply okay.

Firaxis Games has laid a solid foundation with Civilization 7, even though there are plenty of things to improve on. It has the potential to evolve into a truly outstanding entry in the Civilization series, but right now, it needs more time to cook in the oven.

Sid Meier's Civilization VII, in its attempt to tone down the repetition and micromanagement, has harmed it more than any good it did. Aside from the main and core issues of lacking depth in its content and having a horrible UI, Civilization VII isn't that bad. If you want a better game, though, stick with Civilization VI or V.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII improves on areas of the franchise that would make any Civ fan excited. However, a feeling of incompleteness makes the game feel rushed and hard to engage with, leading to what may be an example of a game that was launched too soon but may become better with time.

Civilization VII is a turning point in the saga. The new features, such as the Eras or the choice of leader and civilization significantly modify the gameplay. They need adjustments, but the approach is interesting. What is not justified is the lack of a clear user interface. I recommend it, but it must be understood that it is an installment that breaks with the previous more than one believes at first.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII simplifies its many systems, maybe sometimes to its own detriment for some, but to me, it is still an incredibly satisfying strategy game. No two campaigns will ever be the same, and you will be hooked by looking at the clock six hours later, wondering where the time has gone.

For now, the launch of Civilization VII offers a game with an exceptionally high-quality core, stunning graphics, and an outstanding soundtrack. While it may not yet fully meet the expectations of the new generation of the series, it lays a strong foundation for exciting possibilities ahead.

Whether you're leading a civilization through the ages, forging strategic alliances, or shaping the fate of the world with diplomatic decisions, Civilization VII is a completely new experience that's rich, dynamic, and simply unforgettable.

Besides the abysmal UI, Civilization 7‘s simplifying changes come down to personal taste. For newcomers or fans hungry for a more pared-back or guided experience, there is a lot to love in them. More experienced players or those who value self-driven strategy will find more friction despite some changes being more universally beneficial.

Civilization 7 lays a solid foundation but doesn’t yet reach its full potential. While the game is beautiful, packed with content, and delivers that classic “one more turn” feeling, it stops at the moon landing, skipping modern progress. The absence of key leaders like Gandhi or the English also feels strange. Still, empire-building is as satisfying as ever, and with time, the necessary finishing touches will come.

Even if it suffers from ups and downs and we feel the lack of some features from the past (including a real end-game that takes us into the future era), Sid Meier's Civilization VII fully succeeds in modernising and improving the historic saga, thanks to the introduction of game systems that make the whole experience smoother, more satisfying and engaging. Highly recommended for both veterans of the series and newcomers.

After just two games (well, 16 hours in), I can already see myself playing routinely and obsessively, trying different strategies and exploring new civilizations. While a few quality-of-life changes are still needed, this is just the beginning. With multiple planned DLCs (possibly even a futuristic era?) and a vibrant modding community, I expect these minor issues to be addressed soon. Overall, Civilization VII truly is a strategy game for the ages.

Civilization VII is worth playing, but it may be best enjoyed after a few patches and DLCs round out its missing edges. If you’re eager for a fresh take on Civ, you’ll find plenty to appreciate, but if you prefer a more complete experience, waiting might be the better move.

Civilization 7 feels like a new beginning for a beloved series. Although it simplifies a lot of its mechanics, which may not be of liking to old players, it still has that unique and fun addictive gameplay loop.
