For run-and-gun loyalists, there’s actually quite a bit to appreciate. The game offers tight action, varied set of weapons, and level design that rewards players with patience and precision. It might not break new ground, but it absolutely holds its own within the genre. On the flip side, while the shmup sections are solid and enjoyable, they’re not a big enough part of the package to make this a must-play for shmup purists — it's too much effort to get there for too little of the good stuff.

It doesn't compare favorably to the better run-and-gun and shoot-'em-up titles from the fourth generation. That said, it's an absolute work of art from a technological and artistic point of view. If you're interested in the history of game design, especially in SNES assembly coding and pre-rendered 3D graphics, and you love tough-as-nails 90s-era shooters, this new release has a lot to offer.

Rendering Ranger: R² [Rewind] is a very light and straightforward port of a Super Famicom game, but its low price makes it very fair and desirable.

Rendering Ranger R² [Rewind] for me is a testament to the ingenuity of 16-bit game design from the mid '90s and i'm gutted that I never played it first time around. It's definitely a must-play for all the run n gun maniacs out there and for less than a tenner this is absolute steal for your Nintendo Switch!

Rendering Ranger: R² [Rewind] is part of a constellation of stars never before seen by the general public that finally gets its due spotlight. Even with a release three decades ago, the combination of mechanics and precise gameplay make it very attractive for those who would like to have a taste of the 90's in its natural state.
