Among the more recent entries in the Super Robot Wars series, this is the one that delivers the most fun and satisfaction. The crossover flows naturally without feeling forced, the story is cleanly told without unnecessary fluff, and the variety of side missions helps fill in both the gaps of the fast-paced main plot and its comedic beats. It also fixes, to some extent, the power creep issues of past titles, offering a well-balanced experience that keeps you on your toes even in the late game. Unfortunately, the overly inconvenient changes to the UI and the combat confirmation screen that makes it difficult to see crucial information drag down the overall evaluation, which is a real shame. Still, as a whole, this is a strong title that makes me hopeful for the revival of the series.

A surprisingly polished and accessible entry, Super Robot Wars Y skillfully blends multiple anime universes into a cohesive tactical RPG with stunning attack animations and deep customization. While the narrative feels like fan-fiction and the UI can be clunky, its quality-of-life improvements and engaging core gameplay make it a fantastic entry point for newcomers.

Although smaller in scope, “Super Robot Wars Y” makes up with a much better paced story than “Super Robot Wars 30”, difficult encounters for veterans, new mechanics and better visuals. A must for fans of the franchise. Besides, where else will you find a game about Gundams fighting Kaijus?

The protagonist-centered narrative and wide array of character crossovers give Super Robot Wars a stronger sense of identity, elevating its trademark storytelling to new heights. The difficulty has been fine-tuned, moving away from luck-based swings and instead rewarding players who approach each battle with careful strategy. Animation work shows clear improvements, though the uneven quality across different units still keeps the presentation from feeling fully polished. Meanwhile, quality-of-life features lag behind, leaving room for future updates to better match modern standards.

Super Robot Wars Y isn’t for everyone, but fans of mecha know exactly what they’re getting: a nostalgic blast of flashy battles, fanservice, and iconic giant robots. Despite some technical hiccups and a slow-starting story, it delivers hours of strategy, customization, and pure mecha fun. The steep content price and lack of Italian localization are drawbacks, but for those who grew up dreaming of piloting Mazinger or Gundam, this game feels like coming home.

Super Robot Wars Y is a crossover that works more often than it doesn’t. It thrives less on its tactical RPG mechanics and more on the joy of watching decades of mecha anime crash together in one giant spectacle. The story is good if a little dry in its delivery, but the crossover event and battle animations more than make up for it. For every stretch of jargon-filled dialogue I zoned out to, there was an explosive robot finisher waiting to pull me right back in. It’s a little uneven, but it never stopped being fun.

Super Robot Wars Y is a grand celebration of the mecha genre, and despite some minor pacing issues in its story and the lack of voice acting in dialogues, it stands as the ultimate crossover between these beloved franchises, making it highly recommended for fans of Gundam and other acclaimed series featured in the franchise.
