With a sci-fi campaign that does not aim for a groundbreaking narrative, Pragmata manages to stand out due to the excellent relationship developed between its protagonists. The game succeeds in balancing lighthearted interactions with exploration and intense combat blended with puzzles. The futuristic setting works very well, featuring a strong and highly distinctive visual identity, accompanied by a soundtrack that is almost always subtle, yet still delivers some genuinely memorable tracks.

Pragmata is a poignant game that tells a heartwarming story wrapped up in a science fiction horror action game. And while that could have described a handful of past games, Pragmata’s hacking mechanic sets it apart from its previous competitors. As the credits rolled, I found myself itching to go again, and that’s a huge compliment from me as I rarely play games more than once. And yet, while I enjoyed my time with it from start to finish, its minor annoyances keep it from being a 10, and the performance for the admittedly impressive Nintendo Switch 2 port then keeps it from being a 9. And while an 8 is a great score in a review, it is perhaps the most optimistic 8 I’ve ever written.

Pragmata feels like a love letter to numerous sci-fi IPs, and while it may have taken six years to actually release, it seems every single day was one well used by the developers. Gorgeous to look at, fun to play and like a brain worm that’ll keep you thinking about it, Capcom is having an incredible 2026, and a great flagbearer for taking a risk on new IPs.
Pragmata has its issues, but there is one thing it does very right. It tries something different and, for the most part, succeeds in its crafting. The combat can get frustrating, but never because it splits itself between a third-person shooter and a maze-running puzzle. Exploration of the lunar colony is diverse and enjoyable, with the title using a mix of sci-fi ideas on familiar locales.
It's action, it's puzzles, it's terrifying enemies, inspiring (and fear-invoking) new technology, it's a dad and his daughter trying to survive and still finding little bits of joy in a world that's currently out to get them.
PRAGMATA's hack-and-shoot system is genuine new ground for the genre, and Diana is one of the best NPC companions in years — warmhearted, strange, and utterly unforgettable.

The experience I had with Pragmata was so refreshingly memorable that I’d confidently recommend it to anyone who believes the world of video games has become repetitive or creatively stagnant. The only real disappointment is that this wonderfully different experience doesn’t last quite long enough.
Pragmata is a much more reserved and grounded title than its premise may suggest, but that's for the better. Its central duo of Hugh and Diana form a likeable bond, its gameplay keeps itself tight and focused with some great-yet-cumbersome hacking mechanics. Even with some imprecise controls and visual mishaps, Pragmata makes a trip to the moon a sight to behold.
Pragmata is above all a demonstration that originality in AAA games is far from dead and that it is not necessary to conform to modern trends in every aspect.

In a landscape filled with overly familiar formulas and yearly updates, Pragmata stands out by daring to be something different.
Video games are an art form and can tell powerful stories that touch the soul. But they are also interactive experiences that challenge players to engage with deep systems and mechanics. Impressively, Pragmata combines both of these approaches to game design masterfully. Hugh and Diana’s bot-blasting and gravity-hopping adventure combined the best elements from past and present Capcom. In many ways, Pragmata is one of the publisher’s greatest video games, showing that melding a heartfelt narrative and deep gameplay can create generation-defining experiences.
After sequels and revisiting its older catalogue, it is refreshing to see Capcom investing in a new IP with Pragmata, a game that shows how the Japanese developer has its eyes on the future while also iterating on its ideas to create a project that feels both nostalgic and refreshing.
