Sons of Sparta doesn’t reinvent the metroidvania genre, nor does it redefine God of War, but it stands as a solid choice for fans of both. The content is robust, orchestrated by high-quality art and sound direction. Following this project, it would be interesting to see Mega Cat Studios get another shot at this universe, potentially refining the structural edges presented here.

God of War: Sons of Sparta does not deliver the same experience we have come to expect from the series, but that doesn’t mean it offers a shallow one. Instead, it’s a different attempt that takes us on a new journey with Kratos, this time in a 2D format with a Metroidvania structure set within a relatively expansive world, and a story that focuses on an early chapter of Kratos’ life and character. It may not be among the best entries in the franchise, but it remains a title worth experiencing, especially for fans of God of War.

God of War Sons of Sparta unfortunately failed to make me feel anything at all. The combat is sterile and not particularly deep, the Metroidvania elements are paint-by-numbers boring, and the story, while sometimes impactful, doesn't add much to the series lore in any interesting ways. I really don't know who this game was made for.

Sons of Sparta is an interesting departure from the classic God of War games, but in terms of genre it doesn’t stand at the very top of its own pantheon.

It's not one I'd say is for hardcore fans, but it's always interesting to see big IP taken in new directions, and God of War Sons of Sparta is a good little Metroidvania that'll help fill the hole of a new entry in the series for a little longer.

God of War: Sons of Sparta turns Kratos and Deimos into the leads of a side-scrolling Metroidvania set during their Spartan training days. You move through camps, villages, and ruins with a spear-and-shield kit that rewards clean blocks, rolls, and stun finishers, then branch into different spear heads and shields to tweak how fights play out. The pixel art, camera pullbacks, chiptune score, and T.C. Carson’s narration give this prequel a strong Greek-era identity without trying to copy the main games outright. If you’re already into God of War and like 2D Metroidvania games, Sons of Sparta is worth making room for in your backlog.

God of War: Sons of Sparta proves to be a challenging, but worthy entry into the God of War franchise. While it doesn’t retain some of the previous games’ highlights with its big flashy boss fights, and gorgeous cinematics, it does stand out from the crowd by bringing a new art style, co-op, and deeper explanation of the story between Kratos and Deimos, and their unrelenting journey through Sparta. With the return of Terrence C. Carson, fans of the God of War series, old and new will have a fantastic time listening to the narration of what drove Kratos to becoming the God of War.

God of War: Sons of Sparta is still a great addition to the series, both as a case study and as a genre experiment. It doesn’t change God of War, but it does make it deeper by reminding players that there was once a brother behind the god and the monster, trying to do the right thing.

While I love the idea of experiencing the world of God of War in other styles and genres, Sons of Sparta is somewhat disappointing. It's a fun adventure with some great moments, but it suffers from major problems due to its unbalanced combat system, numerous bugs, jerky animations, and a story that never finds its footing despite having interesting ideas that explore the darker aspects of Spartan martial culture.

Sons of Sparta ends up as an uneven effort that falls short in both story and gameplay. Neither a compelling spin-off nor a satisfying side-scrolling action title, it struggles under the weight of the God of War name and never quite lives up to it.

Sons of Sparta feels unnecessary, a prequel few expected and one that adds little to the wider God of War saga. Still, on its own merits, it’s polished and impressive, with strong mechanics, striking visuals, and standout voice work. More indulgent side story than essential chapter, but a solid one nonetheless.

"A unique experience in the God of War universe" God of War: Sons of Sparta offers an innovative side experience in the God of War universe, focusing on the humanity and emotional narrative of Kratos, with complex boss battles and meticulously crafted exploration. Despite the limitations of the visual style and the repetition of some enemies, the game provides an enjoyable experience for fans of Metroidvania and the series alike, with excellent Arabic localization and voice acting.

God of War: Sons of Sparta is a good Metroidvania game. Solid, consistent, respectful. But also cautious. Too cautious to aspire to anything more. It doesn't redefine the subgenre. It doesn't establish itself as a new benchmark. And at this point, reflection becomes inevitable. Is an experiment like this, perhaps imperfect, better than yet another live service project designed to chase the market and then, perhaps, be canceled? Is a “small” God of War that tries to explore different territories better than the total absence of the brand while waiting for a bigger chapter? At the same time, it is legitimate to wonder whether a name like God of War deserved a more ambitious, more refined, more courageous production. Between black and white, in short, there are many shades of gray. Sons of Sparta is exactly there, and for us, that's fine. It's a good product that demonstrates how, on that fine line between rigor and limitation, moderation can become a virtue: essential, disciplined... Spartan. In the positive sense of the term.

Halfway through the game, I stopped comparing it to the big God of War entries and just let it be what it is; that helped a lot. Some fights could’ve hit harder. A few bosses are cool in the moment but don’t really stick. The map made me circle back more than once, wondering if I missed something obvious. And yet… I kept going. It’s not spectacular. It’s not one of those “you have to play this” entries in the franchise. But it’s a solid, surprisingly thoughtful Metroidvania with Kratos at the center, and once I met it on its own terms, I genuinely enjoyed my time with it.

God of War: Sons of Sparta might bring fans back to Greece, but it isn't the way you expected to return. Ghost of Sparta did a fine job of filling in Kratos' backstory before his reign of chaos. Sons of Sparta muddies the past while revisiting a time in Kratos' life that few fans care about.

It has some real issues as a whole, but I really enjoyed my time with God of War: Sons of Sparta. Mega Cat Studios did an admirable job translating the God of War experience into a Metroidvania. It’s nowhere near as fast-paced as any of its AAA entries, but I thought the story they told and the game’s end was a nice mix of what we’ve seen from the series in the past and the present day. That said, slow pacing and fluff really prevent this from being a wholehearted recommendation, especially with it’s $30 asking price when far superior titles can be had for much less.

And while it’s an okay game, this road has been well trodden in the genre and done with more surprise and addictiveness.
