Splatoon Raiders proves that the series can be much more than “just” a great competitive online game, and I hope this is the first of many single-player-focused spin-offs the franchise will bring us.

In spite of some drawbacks, there’s still plenty of enjoyment to be had with Splatoon Raiders. Its fast-paced combat and short levels make Raiders a great game to play in brief bursts, which is particularly ideal for those who play Switch 2 while on the go.

Overall, this is a fun side-step in the Splatoon universe that moves away from the complete online multiplayer of the core titles to deliver a single-player treasure hunt that’s colourful to watch and enjoyable to play.

Overall, it's fun, but most of the levels lack the verve and experimentalism that the single-player structure would have granted the series, finally moving away from the formalism that is essential in multiplayer battles.

When the lights go out on the Spirhalite Islands and the base returns to rocking silently on the sea, you’re left with the feeling that you’ve stumbled upon something rare, because what I feared would be mere filler turned out to be a profound, generous, and surprisingly vast adventure, one that weaves a treasure hunt into a progression that offers no respite. Setting aside technical aspects that could have been more daring and a few somewhat lackluster early islands, you find yourself caught up in a loop that’s as simple as it is hypnotic, where every run promises new loot and every piece of loot drives you toward the next, making it almost impossible to put the game down. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or setting sail for these waters for the first time, my verdict remains the same: Splatoon Raiders is a treasure in every sense, and I can’t wait to see where this new series will take us next.

Splatoon Raiders successfully pivots the franchise into a single-player focus, delivering an incredibly addictive loop powered by bite-sized missions, flawless performance, and a vast array of weapons and gadgets. While its narrative takes a backseat and the visual palette is surprisingly muted compared to the series' usual vibrancy, it remains a standout, hard-to-put-down adventure that proves Splatoon can thrive far beyond traditional multiplayer.

Splatoon Raiders manages to tick a lot of the right boxes by bringing its oft-forgotten single-player mode to the forefront. It’s a fantastic way to introduce new players to the series who were put off by its multiplayer focus, while still challenging the returning players. The fact that it’s such a great game makes it all the more disappointing that it seems to lack any additional accessibility options, especially as motion sickness seemed to be such a problem for some people in Splatoon 3. Hopefully, they might add them in later, as it mars what would have been an otherwise perfect game.

Splatoon Raiders successfully proves that the series can thrive outside its multiplayer roots, delivering a rewarding single-player adventure built around progression and player expression. Although a shallow narrative and an uneven mid-game progression keep it from reaching greater heights, its satisfying gameplay loop and excellent customization systems make those shortcomings easy to overlook. Whether you're a longtime Splatoon fan or simply looking for a fun action-adventure, Splatoon Raiders is a worthwhile expedition that confidently charts a new course for the series.

Splatoon Raiders is a fun, deep single-player adventure, with an art direction that once again stands as one of its greatest strengths. Its clever progression system, exploration, and environmental storytelling make this spin-off much more than an experiment: it is, in all likelihood, the best entry point for discovering everything Splatoon has to offer beyond its multiplayer.

Splatoon Raiders feels like an easy home run for Nintendo. The single-player story will please fans of the original games (particularly Splatoon 3), and the detailed progression system with collectibles, upgrades and treasure does enough of the heavy lifting to keep you coming back again and again.
