Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced may not completely replace the original for every longtime fan, but it doesn't need to. Instead, it's a respectful reimagining that updates one of Ubisoft's most beloved adventures without losing the heart that made it so memorable. If you've been waiting for an excuse to experience Edward Kenway's story again—or for the very first time—this voyage is still well worth taking.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced brings Edward Kenway, the Jackdaw, and the Caribbean back with better combat, cleaner stealth, and cleaner mission flow. The remake keeps the pirate adventure at the centre, with ship battles, fort raids, and exploration still carrying a lot of the fun. It isn’t completely free of old Black Flag baggage, as parkour can still misread your intent and Jackdaw upgrades require plenty of resource chasing. On XBOX Series X, some frame-rate dips, texture pop-in, and visual quirks showed up, but this is still an easy return for Assassin’s Creed fans who wanted Edward’s adventure to play better now.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is a stunning remake that brilliantly captures the essence of what made the original so captivating: Edward Kenway. Though I believe the experience could have been even better with more access to the hidden blade during combat and the inclusion of the beloved DLC, Freedom Cry, Black Flag Resynched delivers an adrenaline-pumping pirate adventure that kept me hooked from start to finish.
I don't know if a remake of a 2013 game was really necessary, but the fact is that Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced manages to perfectly replicate the great experience provided by the original version, modernizing mechanics, bringing new features that expand the game's universe, and cutting segments that added little to Edward Kenway's journey. It is an extremely fun game, both for newcomers and those revisiting the Caribbean seas.

“Black Flag Resynced” is a restoration that is deeply in love with its subject, and this is both its greatest strength and its most obvious limitation. On a technical and artistic level, it’s a delight—the sea, the light, and the Caribbean once again enchant us as much as, if not more than, before—and the abundance of new content proves that the talent for taking risks was certainly there. It’s a shame, then, that this courage didn’t extend all the way to the film’s foundations, leaving behind a battle that’s (perhaps) too tame and a plot that time has inevitably faded. It remains, however, an excellent way to set sail once more—or to do so for the first time, if you haven’t yet visited Edward’s Caribbean. As I write these lines, I’m already itching to get back at the helm of the Jackdaw. And perhaps, for a classic that we love and have always loved, this is precisely the detail that matters more than any other.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has, just like the generation that played the original Black Flag, come of age. If this were a video game adaptation of Pirates of the Caribbean, it would be perfection, but Edward Kenway just doesn’t have quite enough of Jack Sparrow in him. All jokes aside, this remake is a cut above the rest. It’s both a tribute to the original and, in every respect, a game that can hold its own amongst the best in 2026. For me, this game falls just short of a 10 due to a few bugs and the fact that it can still feel repetitive at times. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is the ray of hope Ubisoft needed; hopefully, it can ride the wave of this remake’s success and return to being the developer it once was.

After finishing Resynced, I realized something. I wasn’t comparing it to the original anymore. I was simply enjoying Black Flag again. And honestly, I think that’s the biggest compliment I can give this remake. It respects the original instead of trying to outdo it. The visual overhaul is impressive, the gameplay improvements make a real difference, and the Caribbean is just as addictive to explore as it was all those years ago. If you’ve never played Black Flag before, this is easily the best way to experience Edward Kenway’s adventure. And if you’re someone who sailed these waters back in 2013, Resynced feels less like revisiting an old game and more like meeting an old friend after years apart. Some memories fade with time. Black Flag just found a way to make new ones.
Ubisoft has set a phenomenal new standard for how to handle a remake. Aside from ground combat that can occasionally feel a bit repetitive and easy, this release is virtually flawless. If this standard reflects how the company plans to handle legacy titles moving forward, the gaming world should be incredibly excited for the eventual, highly anticipated remake treatment of the Ezio trilogy.
Black Flag Resynced shines with its spectacular graphics, but just about everything else falls short. The animation and logic glitches—including getting “stuck” in the environment—the lackluster narrative, and the extreme simplification of combat mean it isn’t a very fun game.

It didn’t feel like a revolutionary remake, and that might actually be for the best. Ubisoft didn’t try to change too much of what made Black Flag so iconic. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is more of a package of small quality of life enhancements, as well as vastly improved visuals, than a brand new recreation of the iconic title made from the ground up. Better visuals, improved controls and some modern sensibilities make the game more streamlined than the 2013 original, but everything you’ve loved about it, such as the story, setting, ship combat and so on, is still intact.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced understands exactly why the original is so fondly remembered. Instead of reinventing the wheel, it chose to preserve what made this installment one of the franchise's most beloved, while modernizing visuals, refining systems, and adding fresh content that enriches the return to the game.

If you’ve gotten your fill the first time around, all the bells and whistles that are featured in this updated run of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag will only get you so far. It basically boils down to this: if you want more Assassin’s Creed after, say, tearing through Shadows, but aren’t looking to commit as many hours and want a smaller map and more focused objectives, then it’ll suit your needs just fine.
Everything added elevates the experience, while everything left in feels purposeful. Returning to the Caribbean has never felt better, and Ubisoft has not felt this in control in a long time.
Even meant as a good will gesture to tickle the nostalgia many hold for the 2013 original, I can say Ubisoft was successful in delivering a great modern update to its perennial, pirate-themed classic.
Ubisoft proves that the best way to honor a classic is to deeply understand what made it special, refining the combat, world, and story around Edward Kenway while having the wisdom to leave that core magic untouched.
