Halo Wars 2's cutscenes are pretty, but the controls remains too console-focused for PC and the strategy is a little thin.

Clearly there is no attempt to revolutionize the genre, but still Halo Wars 2 is a really great game, which should be interesting to every fan of strategies. It works great on the controller - a real achievement for the genre. Just keep in mind that the focus of Halo Wars 2 is still placed on the multiplayer and the story campaign with all its pros feels pretty poor.

Halo Wars 2’s compromise between strategy and speed leaves a system without a functional amount of either. Its story bears the hallmarks of the world Bungie first crafted 16 years ago without any of the melodrama or myth. Missing so much of what makes an RTS work and what makes Halo a fiction so many choose to escape into, it’s easy to wonder who Halo Wars 2 is even for.

At the end of the day, Halo Wars 2 is still a highly recommendable title — in fact, likely one of the best RTS games that can be found on the current generation. However, accessibility on consoles came with a price to both controls and gameplay in both campaign and multiplayer modes. But don’t let that stop fans of the series or newcoming gamers to the genre enjoy the game — you are assured to have a blast.

Halo Wars 2 is certainly a worthy addition to the RTS genre and has raised the bar from its predecessor Halo Wars. The artistic style and cinematics complement each other nicely and are accompanied by a fantastic sound track.

Halo Wars 2 isn't a bad game, but compared to the wealth of excellent strategy games we've been spoilt by over the last few years, it feels positively ordinary. Exceptionally well-handled Halo fan service obfuscates a mediocre game that doesn't really have any new ideas. Fans of the franchise will appreciate what is here, but RTS buffs will be better served elsewhere.

Halo Wars 2 fills the niche for a console-accessible real-time strategy game admirably.

Halo Wars 2 doesn’t excel in anything. It’s decent all around but doesn’t really excel in anything. The campaign could have been much longer.

Halo Wars 2 is a great and light RTS experience. If you like campaigns in this genre, you should check it out, but if you are looking for a hardcore competitive experience, you will not find it here. Blitz is ok, but the micro transactions system dose not work well.

If you want to play a Halo game with the simpler story, backs-to-the-wall tone and cinematic flair of Bungie's good ol' days go right ahead and play Halo Wars 2. Just don't expect the quality of the game to match that of the cutscenes.

In the end, I appreciate what Halo Wars 2 has to offer. It may not be a huge step forward for the genre, but its ease-of-use on console -- and the new Blitz mode -- are things other games should look at.

All in all I really enjoyed Halo Wars 2 despite the minor issues it has, most of which can be fixed by upcoming patches. If you enjoy RTS games, Halo Wars 2 is worth your money.

Halo Wars 2 is an ideal strategy game for beginners. There's little doubting that the action is solid and it looks fantastic, but other strange choices mar what would be a great title. From downright bad writing, to the inclusion of pay to win microtransactions in a premium game, there are some absolutely perplexing decisions.

Halo Wars 2 is the sequel that no-one really asked for, but is a surprisingly solid traditional base-building RTS, and is finally on a platform suited for the genre. The campaign is a little lacking, but several different multiplayer modes and the promise of "six months of regular updates" make up for it.

Halo Wars 2 is simultaneously conservative and inventive. It's definitely trying to evoke traditional RTS games – which is not entirely a bad thing given the recent dearth of them – especially when it comes to the campaign, but elements like base construction and Blitz mode make it stand out enough that it doesn't feel like you're just going through the motions for the hundredth time.

But even so, it's still an often-thrilling experience, and a great entry in both the Halo franchise as a reminder that there's always room in the market for a good RTS game.

Halo Wars 2 is an accessible RTS with an engrossing campaign and exciting multiplayer matches, but suffers from technical issues and a lack of content for Blitz mode.

Overall, Halo Wars 2 is a nice addition to the Halo collection as well as to the strategy area, especially on the console, where there are very few in this style.

Halo Wars 2 feels like a great addition to the Halo series, and successfully makes all the battles feel believable and relatable at the same time. Sometimes the unit restrictions might feel a bit on the low side, but the game’s core mechanics, work around this.
