For want of a better term, What Remains of Edith Finch is a playable family tree. Hidden revelations and unpredictable tragedies complement what is an unnerving but somehow warming experience.

What Remains of Edith Finch isn’t some Batmanny trudge through a peat-bog of dead kids and deader parents. It’s about learning and letting go respectfully, finding love and tranquility and even joy in death.

What Remains of Edith Finch is a short but bittersweet adventure of a family struggling to live with its past. It's not exactly bombastic but it'll likely tug a heart string here or two.

What Remains of Edith Finch is heartbreakingly sweet. Its stories, though grim, are enchanting. Even knowing that each story would end with a certain unhappiness, I was happy to have experienced it -- because as What Remains of Edith Finch so brilliantly manages to convey through its nearly two hours of storytelling is that life isn't about the ends; it's about the moments that got us there.

What Remains of Edith Finch is what happens when you make a video game about obituaries. On the surface it just looks like a game about death as you live out the last moments of various people's lives. Search deeper, and you find it's a game celebrating how they lived.

What Remains of Edith Finch is an example of an inventive and engaging experience that both aligns with the traditional definition of what a 'game' can be, and yet also seeks to challenge it. The story can be cliché at times, and sometimes the symbolism lacks subtlety, but what's offered here is a perfect blend of bittersweet themes and motifs. It's linear, but it's enjoyable and intriguing enough to demand your attention for its perfect run time.

Life isn't often what we imagine and death isn't usually what we expect. What Remains of Edith Finch responds by capturing death's despair and tragedy through life's lenses of whimsy and fantasy. Every emotion and detail is left in frame, exposing profoundly anguishing themes that nevertheless develop into endearing pictures of hope and determination. Edith Finch creates a portrait of a family that, even in their doomed eccentricity, feels not only sanguine, but also deeply human.

Given its wide scope, it's understandable that it's also a game that succeeds more in concept than execution. Like the subjects of the multi-generational novels whose tradition it embraces, Edith Finch's individual successes and failures are less important than its overall effect. It's a story made of stories, and the results of its breadth seem more important than the fine details.
