Octopath Traveler is a work with ups and downs in which highlights its wonderful combat system and its beautiful audiovisual section, but has a somewhat debatable argument proposal that will fall in love with those looking for a series of simple stories, but that will disappoint those who want enjoy the archetypal stories of struggle between good and evil. With this work, new paths are opened for the old paths of the JRPG: we will see how long we have to wait to get back on track. Whatever it is, I will wait enchanted, sitting on the edge of the road, yearning for the future journey to be as glorious as this one presages.

Octopath Traveler is great game with an old school feel. It has a rich environment with a well developed story. Game-play may seem repetitive, but the option of eight different characters makes it feel fresh.

Octopath Traveler is a decent game with breathtaking visuals but has a dull battle system with a set of uninteresting characters.

Octopath Traveler is simply fantastic in every meaning of the word, and no Switch owner who has a liking for JRPGs should be without this game in their library.

I absolutely loved every hour of the over one-hundred I poured into Octopath Traveler. It’s beautiful, sounds amazing, has a killer battle system, tells multiple interesting stories in a unique manner and hits all the right nostalgic notes while providing a cool evolution of classic JRPG gameplay. It’s one of my new all-time favorite games, and one I know I’ll revisit numerous times in the future

Octopath Traveler is an honest title, it knows what it's going for, it has a clear direction and it doesn't try to fool the player. A JRPG that seeks to pay tribute to the genre's brilliant times in the 16/32 bits but that knows how to take risks and propose novelties at a mechanical and, mainly, narrative level. The producer said at the time: "We want to make a game that we like ourselves and not to attract the masses" and this is evident in every minute of play. This doesn't mean I don't have problems. His system of combat, the construction and exploration of his world and his audio-visual output border on excellence. However, on a narrative level, although it explores new directions with very good ideas, it does not exploit its potential and its main game structure tends to become repetitive.

Tightly designed to a fault, the game's rigid structure works well to present eight different perspectives. From the way each of the characters' unique skills make exploration and combat engaging to the wonderful rhythm of the thoughtful turn-based battles, there are enough excellent ideas in Octopath Traveler that help to overlook some glaring flaws.

In Octopath Traveler there is a lot of love and passion, you can tell at first sight. Octopath Traveler is a beautiful, fairytale-like diorama that recalls the classics of the genre time and again, but lacks the essential framework to bring the pieces together into a harmonious whole. The beautiful presentation and the great fighting system are contrasted by eight independent stories whose quality varies greatly - and which hardly suffice as motivation for 80 hours of playing time.

Octopath Traveler is unapologetically old-school, and would not have been out of place if it had released back in the golden age of JRPGs.

It is a game that has a slow start, both narratively and musically, combat is easy to learn and generally offers 60 ~ hours of pure old love, recommended for fans of the genre, knowing that it is a 16-bit game in 2018.

It's hard to imagine it going down as anything other than a true classic both for Square Enix and for Nintendo.

Octopath Traveler is a great game that shows the market still craves what classic JRPGs offer. It innovates in clever ways while keeping the nostalgic heart engaged. The individual stories are well-told but the core narrative never has them intersect in any meaningful way. Still, if you're looking for something to spend plenty of hours pouring yourself into, Octopath is a fun, beautiful way to do it.

So, I ended up really glad that I took the time to go through this game, and a lot of time it was. By the time I finished the True Ending I was just shy of 110 hours of gameplay. That is before I’ve even gone back and done entirely optional things like finishing all the Side Quests and getting H’aanit a full compliment of super rare boss summons. Is it worth the full price of a new game, $59.99? Even with the retro style graphics, that is without a question the case. Not only is there many hours of great gameplay, but there is actually quite a bit of innovation in combat that makes this not just an exercise in nostalgia. Not only does this game restore some of the faith I had in the developer/publisher, but it also makes me care a little less that Kingdom Hearts is not really for me and perhaps Final Fantasy XVI won’t be either. I now have Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest as my staple franchises from this company, and that is enough to keep me happy. Bring on a sequel, now it will be a game that I pre-order the moment it’s announced.

It’s a triumph in artistry. Along with its silky-smooth gameplay, you’ve got yourself a JRPG that you shouldn’t miss — heck, it’s a title that every Switch owner should have, even if they aren’t too interested. It’s just great to see that Square Enix is embracing that old-school JRPG flair and made a near-perfect game.

In the end, despite a few drawbacks, Octopath Traveler lives up to the hype of the throwback style of gameplay. Allowing players to choose one of eight characters is an interesting concept. Giving players the option to choose which character to add to the party also adds a great deal of strategy. Visuals, as well as music, are both great. They managed to do exactly what was set out to do: make a modern JRPG with retro aesthetics. Long time JRPG fans or even newcomers should certainly take the time to play this game.

Just as Bravely Default before it, Octopath Traveler is a reimagining of a classic formula, packaged to feel new and exciting. Even though the issues with its character interactions and lackluster dungeon designs holds it back from true greatness, the likeable cast of characters and a deeply satisfying combat engine makes it one that's easily recommendable to just about anyone with a Switch.
