Even though SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy brings together some of the best and most popular females from the SNK Universe, a creepy story mode that lacks content and an overly basic combat system relegates this game to the lower end of the fighting games of recent.

SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy's primary appeal is its female cast of characters and they don't even look that good.

*I've been stuck in a hospital room for the last eight days and of course the hospital WiFi is from the Bronze Age, so online multiplayer was not in the cards. Thanks to Daan for the assist!

Despite its shortcomings, I did enjoy my time with SNK Heroines. Its weak plot and lacklustre single player options did leave me wanting more, but the fun and ease of playing with friends really stood out to me. If you have a group to play with or find yourself eager to play against the masses online, it's definitely a game I can recommend. An appreciation for the partially dressed also helps.

If you're looking for a casual style fighter, this one should fit your needs. There's some room for deeper strategies with how the blocking is set up, but if you're more of a fan of double cancels mid-frame during a special move to input a super that drains all of your super bars, then you might want to pass on this one, especially if you're not in the mood to take on the fan service it offers.

While I can't say SNK Heroines is a bad game, I cannot recommend it to you unless you love its aesthetics and fanservice. Because, what is the point of recommending a gameplay-wise average fighting game at this time? 2018 has already treated us to EVO's new favorite Dragon Ball Fighterz, Blazblue CTB, Fighting EX Layer, Street Fighter V Arcade Edition, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. This year was fantastic for fighting games, and it hasn't finished yet (Soul Calibur VI and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are still coming!). There isn't any strong reason why you should pick SNK Heroines before any of these other high-quality games. But you will have some "sexy" fun if you do, and I know this can be a dream game for a lot of players.

While playing through SNK Heroines I had a difficult time figuring out its true target audience. The combat system isn't complex, or interesting, enough to attract hardcore fighter fans while the steep price and lackluster visuals make it difficult to recommend for fan service alone. Unfortunately, it seems like SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy falls into an awkward middle zone and doesn't excel where it needs to.

SNK HEROINES ~Tag Team Frenzy~ is made with love from the creators and it shows. It's accessibility is meant for players of all skill types, neither catering to only the hardcore players or only casuals; just both at once. There is plenty of content to unlock and plenty of ways to customize your character. Even if it's not as sharp as the PlayStation 4 version, it's still eye-candy on the Switch. The soundtrack is also pretty good with the best remixes of past songs. There's enough single player for the solo player and co-op/versus for players of two, but up to 8 can play together both offline and online. Above all, it's just fun to play. Looking forward to the future characters being added to the roster.

SNK Heroines -Tag Team Frenzy- is a fun game to waste some time with, however, the lack of optimization on the Switch port might turn off some players. It's a silly game, there's a lot of fun to be had, but the unsteady frame rate when in handheld mode coupled with the fact that the game CAN reach 60fps docked, but just doesn't is extremely disappointing.

SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy is a light fare for fighting games, but there is more than enough smart systems to keep fighting game aficionados interested. Even better, the game is a cute entry point for people new to the genre. So long as you aren't expecting a deep combat system or extensive PvP functions, you won't be let down. Either way, the fabulous SNK heroine cast will likely impress–one way or another.

It begs the question who exactly SNK Heroines is for? The hardcore fighting game fans aren't going to find enough here to pull them away from Dragon Ball FighterZ or Tekken 7 and yet, they're the ones who are going to appreciate the references to SNK's arcade history throughout.

Though pretty to look at, and maybe fun to play for a bit with some friends, the combat system here just isn't meaty enough for any long-term or tournament worthy enjoyment. Really only just for people that still don't have an internet connection, or are just really into this sort of thing.

Overall, SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy is a decently fun, if a little basic fighter. By no means will it shock the fighting game world - or contain the depth needed for highly competitive play - but it’s good fun nevertheless, that appeals to newcomers with its simplified battle system. Existing fans of the SNK characters I’m sure will enjoy the team up combinations, but may be disappointed with the lack of customisation options on offer to keep them playing.

The lack of a functional story mode and some technical issues with the frame rate bring down an otherwise serviceable fighting game. This is not providing a substitute to King of Fighters, but it is an average fighter for those who are seeking something casual with plenty of fan service moments.

It's almost heartbreaking how much fun SNK Heroines is, because all of that fun is wrapped up in a fetishistic presentation that didn't need to be there in the first place. By putting out a cool, casual-friendly fighting game that happened to only have a roster of female characters, SNK could have reached a wider audience of people and rekindled some of the magic they made 18 years ago with Gals' Fighters. Instead, though, SNK put Mai Shiranui in a cowprint bikini and gave Terry Bogard breasts, alienating a massive amount of people in the process. SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy is one of the funnest new fighting games I've played this year, but I can only hope that a future installment trades the fanservice for familiarity, and gives us the Gals' Fighters sequel the world deserves.

SNK's female-only fighter lacks the complexity of its older brethren but can be a glitzy over-the-top fun time if you let it. Fanservice hides a fun, simple to grasp fighting system that is deeper than you think.

SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy is a mixed bag – some fun twists make this a great fighting game for quick bouts, particularly for novice fighters. Unfortunately, the lack of depth makes it a short-lived experience. And the less said about the girls' appearances, the better.
