The Sinking City is a faithful adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft´s universe. As in other versions, some mecanics are pretty interesting and make it an interesting adventure, but this port to Nintendo Switch has many technical flaws and the open world structure feels "empty", long loading times aside.

The Sinking City is a game that in parts, is good. There are parts that I have quite liked, and there are some parts I really haven’t liked and found myself being engaged in at all.

The Sinking City nearly drowns in its amazing atmosphere and the investigative work, especially when it comes to the main story, is fantastic. However, Frogware’s ambitious attempt at combining an investigation game with an open world simply doesn’t work as well as it could have. Sidequests are mostly uninteresting and with a big part of the game focused on collecting scarce resources from infested zones, the clunky combat doesn’t help.

A promising premise, drowned by its menacing ambition.

The Sinking City is a game that had everything to succeed in the new generation, but in addition to the technical issues, the plot ends up saturating in a very short time, as well as the entire system itself. It might be better to stay away, at least for now.

The Sinking City is not going to be a game for everyone. It’s quite a slog and there’s a ton of backtracking. But if you stick around, the story itself is really great and there’s some really fun and unique detective mechanics at play. It’s a shame the rest of the game didn’t get a better quality of life upgrade. Oh well, you can always just go read some H.P. Lovecraft, no loading times or glitches involved.

Prominent amongst the PC gaming streaming scene currently, The Sinking City is a very good game that was awkwardly converted to run on the Nintendo Switch. It was unsettling for me to sit down for hours on end to review. It also launched during a stretch where a lot of new games are releasing to challenge my attention. But I'll probably revisit The Sinking City during quieter times, and when it's hopefully been patched.

Despite featuring elements from many video games that I love, The Sinking City still fell flat for me.

The Sinking City is a flawed gem, marred with technical issues and repetitive gameplay. The interesting worldbuilding and story elements are insufficient to carry the game in the face of poorly applied mechanics. The Sinking City could have benefited from an additional delay and a tighter game play loop.

An occasionally entertaining detective game blighted by poor writing, rote combat, and a dreary open world.

It's a bad decision that create The Sinking City as an open world game, which makes the gameplay like a heap of loose sand. But the story is interesting, as well as being a detective.

Overall, The Sinking City is an average game with good graphics but the gameplay isn't for everyone. I think I would have liked this game more if the combat was better and if it wasn't so slow paced. Other than that, people that like games about investigating things will love playing The Sinking City.

The Sinking City is a good investigation game that is weighed down by repetitive and tedious combat, along with some outdated technical details. If you are a Lovecraft lover you should give it a chance.

The Sinking City is a great detective game on the surface, but when diving deep, there are a lot of cracks that hinder its ability to succeed.

There has been a real run of Lovecraftian horror titles coming to the Switch of late, no doubt making horror fans quite happy, and among them The Sinking City is the one doing it's best to swing for the production values fences...

The Sinking City for Nintendo Switch has managed to transfer all the essence of PC and other consoles version, but it has paid the price in performance and in several technical downgrades in areas where the game was not brilliant already. However with the good and the bad of the original work, if you are a fan of H.P. Lovecraft, you will have the opportunity to enjoy this portable version, and with some additions to the Nintendo system.

The Sinking City might be worth looking into for anyone who enjoys using their noggin to solve investigations. It may be even more intriguing if you enjoy getting sucked into Lovecraft atmosphere. You might even say we can never have too much of either of these and that's probably true. This game shouldn't be overlooked at all, but what lies here is potential drowned in a sea of mishaps. If only the optimization and performance on Nintendo Switch was a little better and the controls didn't feel like it was borrowed from a previous console generation, it could've been smooth sailing to a full recommendation.

The Sinking City is an excellent adventure game that doesn’t quite reach greatness because it’s saddled with a frankly awful combat system.

The Sinking City is an incredibly ambitious open world detective title which punches way above its weight thanks to various refreshing mechanics, an engaging narrative and some impressively alluring world design. Combat woes, a rigid open world and numerous technical issues unfortunately let what's otherwise a great game down. However, The Sinking City is still well worth a look.

Without a doubt, The Sinking City is the best Lovecraft game we’ve ever seen. It’s still not a perfect title—for some reason, none are—but it’s a damn fun time as a Lovecraftian private eye. Hopefully, Frogwares will follow up with another Lovecraft title with stronger combat. But if investigating eldritch horrors in an entirely unique game world is what you’re after, you need to play this despite its flaws.
