Critic Reviews for Cytus α

Cytus α is a wonderful take on the rhythm genre with a note layout which is really nicely suited to Nintendo Switch. Tapping and sliding your way around the handheld's touchscreen is an absolute delight when you're in full flow, and should more and more players start to fill up the online lobby, this could easily be considered one of the best rhythm games on the platform.

It's hard to find fault with Cytus Alpha. There are some good and bad songs, with enough variety to give players plenty of different experiences. When you consider it's the type of game anyone can get into but very few can master, it makes the progression from newcomer to pro a little more accessible. Sure, it lacks videos and some of the things found on other rhythm games, it's still the type of game I could see pulling out in the airport and enjoying or booting up once in a while for a quick play.

As music rhythm games go, Cytus Alpha is up there with the best of them.

The sheer quality of Rayark's rhythm games override any small issues that I might have with them, and Cytus Alpha is one of the finest playing rhythm games you'll ever come across. It's abstract, minimalist and focused, but it delivers such vibrant rhythm game action that it's impossible not to love.

At a time where more and more rhythm games are becoming available, especially on Switch, CYTUS Alpha struggles to stand out a little, but it's nonetheless an enjoyable addition to the Switch rhythm game catalogue and worth giving a look.

The lack of bells and whistles might drive some players away, but those who embrace the straight-forward attitude of the game will find a lot to like in Cytus Alpha. It also helps that Cytus Alpha is a music title that plays great in the Nintendo Switch's tablet mode, so the game is a good recommendation for players of the system who want some quality music gaming on the go.

Personally, I believe Cytus Alpha is the best rhythm-based game out on the Nintendo Switch, despite its little-known soundtrack. With over 200 songs to unlock, an intriguing story to uncover, and an online leaderboard to climb, there are literally hours upon hours worth of content awaiting your twitchy fingers! Launching with support for both touch and Joycon gameplay, the developers learnt from their previous release (VOEZ) and made the game accessible to all from the get-go (even though I strongly urge everyone to play with touch and not the Joycons if possible). The artwork is glorious, the music is amazing, and the gameplay is as smooth as you can get – I’m really struggling to find anything negative about this incredible game.
