6 / 10.0 - Sludge Life
Jun 3, 2020

Sludge Life isn’t a game that will be pleasing for everyone. This is the kind of game that revels in ineffective sarcasm and a sense of dourness. It’s the video game equivalent of a sad mumble rap song, a title that attempts to exude a sense of rebelliousness with a coating of indifference.

6.5 / 10.0 - Those Who Remain
Jun 3, 2020

I wanted to like it, I really did, especially since the true premise of the game is pretty original. It could lend itself very well to other games in the future. Unfortunately, its fleeting moments of brilliance are lost within the dregs of tired horror tropes, inconsistency with its rules, uninspired gameplay mechanics, and an unfulfilling ending.

The Switch port of Journey to the Savage Planet might have been a disappointing due to the severe amount of visual setbacks and a somewhat lackluster overall performance, but at the end of the day, it’s still a very playable and hilarious experience. If you can ignore the graphical hindrances in favor of the ability to play this game on-the-go, then this is an easy recommendation.

You can still have a ton of fun with the Switch port of Bioshock, as this is the best portable version of this classic masterpiece. Although, when compared to all of the other previously released versions of the game, this is only technically superior to the clunky iOS port from 2014.

The Switch port of Bioshock might have been a disappointment, but I’m glad they didn’t botch the port of Bioshock Infinite. This game still looks as gorgeous as it used to when it first came out seven years ago, and it’s still one hell of an emotional and entertaining ride from beginning to end.

Finally, I do appreciate how the artists tried to promote their (bad, but funny) music with a video game. A terrible video game, granted, but that’s still somewhat commendable. Don’t get me wrong, Whiteboyz Wit Attitude: The Pursuit of Money is awful, but I still think you should give it a try. I’ve played worse games and had to pay for them.

Anyone who is a fan of Monty Python, or sarcastic British humor in general, needs to play it. This game had me cracking up all the way through. It’s a breath of fresh air in an otherwise quagmire of mediocrity that is the current point-and-click scene.

9.5 / 10.0 - Half-Life: Alyx
May 27, 2020

It’s refreshing to have a game that focuses on telling a full fledged story experience on a platform that is mostly stretching its legs with gameplay tech demos. It just so happens that this full fledged story is also a Half-Life game that also lives up to its predecessors and ties in nicely with them.

Missile Command: Recharged didn’t try to revamp the franchise’s formula with revolutionary gameplay changes, but honestly, I think that worked for the best. It’s just a fairly good attempt to bring the franchise to modern consoles, being best enjoyed on the Switch due to its portability.

8 / 10.0 - Ion Fury
May 27, 2020

Ion Fury is a total blast, as it doesn’t try to be anything other than a fun, challenging shooter. Giving a game like this a deep story or any other moment that isn’t comprised of killing enemies or solving puzzles would have been a detriment to its great gameplay loop and overall game design.

Shantae and the Seven Sirens is an excellent return to form for the belly-dancing indie heroine. It’s a game that looked back to its previous iterations, took notes of what people liked the most about each one of them, and added everything to a blender together with some new gameplay features and quality of life improvements.

8.5 / 10.0 - Resolutiion

A game that should be enjoyed by anyone who likes to discover a story and piece together lore as opposed to something streamlined and linear like many titles are.

8.5 / 10.0 - The Persistence
May 24, 2020

The Switch version of The Persistence managed to exceed my expectations in every single way. Not only it’s a good proof that you can also port former VR games to a non-VR environment, but it’s also a fun horror-themed roguelike with great visuals and environmental design running pretty well on such underpowered hardware.

9 / 10.0 - Maneater
May 24, 2020

Maneater is a game made by people who knew the limitations imposed by their budget, the current gen of consoles, and the overall nature of open world games. They managed to craft an incredibly polished murderfest experience that makes you want to kill everything in sight due to how fun its gameplay is.

I don’t think I would have enjoyed Red Wings: Aces of the Sky if I had played anywhere else but the Switch. Its arcade-like controls inspired by Rogue Squadron, short missions, and excellent survival mode are a perfect fit for a portable system.

2 / 10.0 - Boreal Tales
May 22, 2020

On the whole, I was disappointed by Boreal Tales. There might have been some potential for an interesting game in here, but that’s all buried beneath strange design choices, frustrating controls, an overly convoluted story, and a myriad of bugs. I can’t imagine it would be worth your time, even if the bugs were fixed.

I think this is the perfect case of a game in which its themes and message were crafted with a higher degree of priority than its gameplay loop. Arrest of a Stone Buddha tries to provide players with moments of reflection in between bouts of ultraviolent gunplay, but its actual gameplay loop is so clunky and frustrating that the only thing you’ll want to think once a level is over is “who the hell designed that level”.

Beginning to end, Infinite – Beyond The Mind was a ton of fun for such a small game. So much so, it is a game even I would consider trying to learn to speedrun now that I’ve played through it.

Chimera Squad feels like an experimental game in the XCOM franchise, and that is very welcome. Although not every change and addition worked in here, I still appreciate how bold they have been with this particular smaller title.
