Thymesia is an interesting title for those who already know the soulslike genre but aren't ready or don't want to go through so many hardships in more demanding games of this type. Its main highlight is the agile and competent combat system that encourages the player to maintain an offensive posture most of the time in a more modest, but still very challenging, soulslike experience that will yield good hours of gameplay.

A game with a lot of ambition and underwhelming execution. A bit rough around the edges yet incredibly engaging if you can get past the initial setbacks.

Thymesia may look like an Indie-Developer trying to do Bloodborne, but it ends up being more than that. Thymesia seamlessly blends the fast, often frantic combat of games like Devil May Cry with a more thoughtful approach, giving the players the tools to quickly leap between enemies, while strategically switching between light and heavy attacks, as well as flashy specials. While regular combat is often a fun power fantasy, the game truly shines in its boss fights, where two equally deadly warriors dance around each other parrying and trading blows. The only sore spot in the gameplay is that there isn’t already a Thymesia 2 to sink my teeth into.

Thymesia is a great game. It takes some getting used to, and the combat can feel a bit clunky at first, but once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll be zipping around the screen dealing damage to every enemy in your way and hoping that you dodged in time to avoid them doing the same to you.

Besides the amazing Sekiro, there is not a more fun combat experience in a Souls game than what is experienced in Thymesia.

The game’s terrible parry system, lack of variety in its weapons, and incredibly frustrating feather stun move compound into a game that I struggled to enjoy, despite my best efforts.

Thymesia is a great souls-like video game done a budget and it not only follows the expected formula to a tee but also puts its own unique spin on combat and leveling which combined make this a very worthwhile experience.

As a whole, Thymesia feels like a missed opportunity. The plague weapons and unique sense of progression carry its gameplay that can often feel a touch unfinished and forgettable. It’s short and very uneven: just when it’s starting to feel a bit more interesting, it ends in a very unspectacular fashion. If you are foaming for more soulslike games, then I guess that Thymesia can (maybe) be a good time. Even so, I’d strongly recommend grabbing it on sale.

Thymesia draws inspiration from ideas and mechanics from various famous soulslikes to shape its gameplay, resulting in a mix that works quite well. Although visually it is not as solid or impressive as other productions, its aesthetics are quite striking and it has frenetic but tactical combat at the same time. Of course, it needs some adjustments in certain sections, since the collisions and the timing are not polished at all. Funny and entertaining, but nothing that hasn't been seen already.

Thymesia sports fast 3D action combat that's engaging and unique to the subgenre, where flashy combos with multiple weapons lead to meaningful progression for skilled players. Unfortunately, the game does little else to separate itself from the soulslike pack.

At the end of the day, Thymesia is another good addition to the growing space of Soulslike, delivering something different enough in its storytelling and the tweaks made to combat. While it may not be the best when it comes to variety, it cannot be faulted when the all-important combat has plenty to offer. Even in the age of calamity facing the once thriving Kingdom of Hermes, there is still a silver lining after all.

Thymesia is a mixed bag and simply doesn’t do enough to stand out. There are some neat ideas when it comes to how you approach combat encounters with plague weapons, but a lack of polish remains a constant obstacle in almost every facet of it. When it works, and all the systems line up, you can have a lot of fun, but that rarely happens. Despite its excellent visuals, the world feels shallow because of its linearity, and the use of annoying enemies to compensate for a lack of intricate level design makes an already difficult experience, exhausting.

Thymesia is a great idea, but it feels like it couldn't decide if it wanted to be its own thing or march to the beat of the Souls Drum. This hampers the product, alongside the loose feeling, lack of feedback in combat, and non-appearance of voice acting. In a post-Elden Ring world, we need to be looking at innovative and unique additions to a genre that has seemingly reached its apex. Sadly Thymesia seems to be solely carried by dated and constructive design, alongside an interesting theme.
