Just as Disgaea 6 was an example of how a good series can begin to deteriorate over time, Disgaea 7 is a good—nay, great—example of how it’s never too late for a series to get back on track. Not only does Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless fix the myriad mistakes of its predecessor to the point of over-correction (and I mean that in a good way), but it even finds ways of utilizing mechanics that debuted in Disgaea 6 in ways that are both balanced and, if you’ll pardon the pun, intelligent. Regardless of whether you lauded or loathed the adventures of Zed & co., there’s no excuse to skip out on what is both the latest and greatest entry in the Disgaea series. Hinomoto is beckoning you—answer its call!

Disgaea 7 improves upon its predecessor by building a balanced and more complete roster than what we've become used to, but unfortunately it falls apart in other areas.

Even if very conservative in its nature, Disgaea 7 is a very solid entry in the franchise, thanks to some new ideas (such as the Kaiju-like transformation and the online asynchronous multiplayer) and hundreds of hours of content. But beware: the latest ones come at the cost of a lot of repetition and grinding.

Disgaea 7 marks a successful revival of the franchise's core strengths, blending its signature over-the-top gameplay mechanics with a fresh Samurai-themed narrative. While staying true to its roots, the game introduces new character classes and innovative features like "Jumbification," offering both long-time fans and newcomers a rich, strategically demanding experience that feels both nostalgic and novel.

We can only be congratulated by the fact that Nippon Ichi and NIS America continue to offer us installments of this tactical RPG saga, as they have their own character and a lot to offer. The almost 30 hours - or almost 100 if we are going to squeeze the game - that Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless will last us make the investment make sense as long as we like the genre.

Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless represents the best execution of the series’ trademark combat and level systems to date. It’s a showcase of features that have been perfected over the past twenty years to be enjoyed by players, both new and returning. While there are a few new concepts that could have used more work, and it’s a shame that the Switch version is noticeably compromised, it’s a major step back in the right direction for a long-running franchise that’s got a legion of loyal fans for a good reason.

Disgaea always stands out for its continuous development, and Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless offers fans an additional incentive to sink numerous hours into this peculiar and charming world. The systems and features become more and more in-depth, so it's not exactly suitable for beginners. Still, it's worth a visit for those who might have been a bit disappointed last year or are looking for a new strategy RPG.

NIS America said Disgaea 7 would be built with Disgaea 6 feedback in mind, and the result is a much stronger, more traditional entry.

Disgaea 7 marks a definitive return to form for the series after the slump of its predecessor. This is a great game for those with a taste for Disgaea, even if those new to the series likely find more value in older titles.

If you liked previous Disgaea games - grinding your levels up to max, performing increasingly higher damaging attacks, and seeing a mass of numbers fill your screen - Disgaea 7 continues that trend and amplifies it further.

Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless may not be the revolutionary chapter we were promised, but overall we are more than satisfied with the work done by the guys at Nippon Ichi Software, who after the several missteps made with the previous episode rolled up their sleeves to ensure that the series could get back on the right track.

Like the rest of the series, Disgaea 7 is a massive game. The combat and progression systems boast near-infinite depth. The writing is snappy and fun, the music is catchy, and the art style is extremely anime. On the other hand, those infinite systems are downright impenetrable. You need a very particular focus to wade through so many menus. And the grind is still monumental, no matter what sneaky tricks you employ. For fans of the series, Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless is a series highlight. To all the new players, I say: Welcome! This will either be a joyless slog or the start of a brand new addiction.

Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless continues the Disgaea series' inexorable march forward, adding new mechanics and further complexity. It features a story campaign that goes down smoothly, if a little forgettable, but it's full of clever encounters that require more input than previous outings. It won't convert unbelievers, but for those already on the hook, it's as good as the series gets.

Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless is a substantial step-up from the previous game and it's bursting with so many zany mechanics and party customisation options that it'll make your head spin. Trying to master some of the missions will still give you a headache, though.

Play Disgaea 7. It's fun, strategic, complex. If I could only play one game for the rest of my life, it might as well be Disgaea 7. The new additions are well done, and leave behind less accomplished features of previous titles.

Disgaea 7 has been a fantastic ride. It's a meaty game to say the least and should you wish to pour hundreds of hours into this game, you easily could. I for one am excited to see what I've missed from previous entries and will be there day one for the hopeful Disgaea 8.

Disgaea 7 takes the series back to its golden days and offers tons of tactical combat and a comic story, making it a perfect fit for the fans of JRPG. It's not by any means a revolutionary experience and doesn't help the genre to move forward.
