Personally, I am not a fan of turn-based RPGs, usually as they take too long or are too arduous. Dragon Quest 3 Remake has given the classic game, series and myself a fresh look at what potential these genres store. With the pixel art beyond stunning, music filled to the brim with iconic tracks and accessibility for everyone, this is far more than just a shiny remake. If anyone is looking to join this expansive series then now is the time and this is the game! It’s even available on PC and Xbox! To Echo our editors statement, this is how classic RPGs should be remade!
The Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is everything I hoped it would be—a love letter to a timeless classic, updated with modern features. Its gorgeous visuals, refined combat, and thoughtful additions make it a joy to play, whether you’re a veteran fan or a newcomer.
The Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is a remarkable tribute to one of the most cherished RPGs in gaming history.
Make no mistake, I had fun playing DRAGON QUEST III. I appreciate what it’s done and brought to the table. But over the course of its runtime, I found myself losing interest thanks to a bombardment of random encounters and not enough between all that. So many games have come since then (and are still coming out today!) that have been greatly influenced by this JRPG classic, bringing their own twists and turns to storytelling and battle systems. There’s a good time to be had here in the HD-2D Remake, but if you’ve never played DRAGON QUEST III before, walk in with tempered expectations and to be down a few more hours than the game really should’ve been. ∎
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake captivates with stunning visuals and nostalgic charm but may challenge newcomers with its old-school design.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is the best version of a quintessential RPG. Not only does it respect and uphold what the original game stood for, but in many ways it offers up even more depth than it held originally. The story is made grander and more emotional thanks to changes that are so natural, I’d have believed you if you told me they always existed. Combat is made better thanks to new vocations to spice up already strong replay value, the addition of challenging new bosses, and higher difficulties making it the toughest version available. The gorgeous artistic overhaul it received is also among the best I’ve seen for remakes in general. Dragon Quest III isn't my favorite or even my second favorite game in this series, but it says a lot that I still think it's among the very best of RPGs that I’ve played. My already glowing thoughts on it grow ever brighter with this version, and I was skeptical that such a thing was even possible. Even after receiving several remakes that I already thought were great, they somehow found a way to make it even better. 1988 was a long time ago now, but some legends truly never fade.
The fact that Dragon Quest III still shines, even 36 years after its original release, shows that we are dealing with a truly outstanding game and an excellent remake. It's a production that deserves to be listed by UNESCO because besides the fun of playing it, it also provides aesthetic experiences akin to visiting an art gallery.

With Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Square Enix adopted a conservative strategy, modernising a milestone in the JRPG genre without trivialising the original experience. This results in a fresh-yet-classic title full of charming visuals, quality of life enhancements and things to do, allowing both new players and veterans to enjoy this timeless masterpiece.

Another spectacular HD-2D JRPG from Square Enix, which is becoming one of its main crown jewels. Despite the graphic update, its essence remains intact, full of secrets and good challenges that you will love to know. One of the best games from this developer in the last 10 years.

The eternal charm of Dragon Quest flows powerfully in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, a well-thought-out remastering of the classic RPG released in 1988 for the Nintendo Entertainment System by Chunsoft. With its significant additions to gameplay, quality of life, and the HD-2D style used in the Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy games, representing the right blend of old and new aesthetics and majestically blending 3D and 2D environments while adding depth and dimension, it is impossible not to recommend this remake that gives Dragon Quest 3 its splendid and definitive form, although some of the flaws of the original are unfortunately brought out more in this remake.

Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake is enjoyable to explore, but the endless random battles get tiring after a while.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake succeeds in honouring one of the greatest RPGs of all time whilst making it accessible to a new generation of players. Its jaw-dropping visual upgrade, the re-recorded take on memorable music, and accessible quality-of-life updates help breathe fresh life into a beloved classic, and whilst some old-school elements such as persistent grinding and clunky menus won’t be for everyone, they don’t stop Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake from being an outstanding RPG that truly has stood the test of time.
Square Enix could have made a greater effort to create a full remake but chose a more conservative approach with *Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake*. The game modernizes a cornerstone of the JRPG genre while staying highly faithful to the original material, avoiding unnecessary risks. The result is an enjoyable and delightful remake that appeals to both devoted fans and newcomers curious about the series' origins.

Dragon Quest III is one of the most influential RPGs in history. Originally released in 1988, the game was a mammoth journey compared to its predecessors, coming with a complex class system for the time with many of the mechanical and narrative conventions coming from here. Throughout its 36-year history, the game has had several re-releases and remakes, and the HD-2D version is the definitive one.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is surprising for being so anti-climactic in 2024. It respects the original so much that there are details that become hard from start to finish, but it doesn't matter. When you get into it you understand that its greatness lies in its imperfections and its toughness. It is a JRPG of those that are no longer made. You have to play it.
