Avowed Reviews
Avowed blends traditional RPG elements with modern accessibility, offering satisfying combat, meaningful choices, and rewarding exploration. Set in the world of Eora, the game delivers a well-designed experience with a focus on character-driven storytelling. Some boss fights feel underwhelming, and minor graphical hiccups and load times hold it back from perfection, but the immersive world and dynamic gameplay make it a worthwhile adventure for RPG fans.
Obsidian Entertainment brings the world of Eora to life with a fresh perspective, bringing players closer to the action. A well-tailored story, engaging combat, and reactive companions all make for an enjoyable adventure from start to finish.
Avowed stands alone as a hugely enjoyable experience that scratches the RPG itch without tearing off your arm. If you haven't got a huge amount of time on your hands, that's worth its weight in Skeyt.
Avowed is a great RPG, with a narrative that could be among the best of Obsidian. Although the storyline is not as surprising as others, it is still very good. The humor and the seal of the studio is present all the time as in The Outer Worlds. This scheme is joined by a medieval setting with an original and striking artistic design that makes you feel in a world never visited before. This, together with its graphic quality, makes the title look spectacular.

What Obsidian did with New Vegas to improve Fallout as Avowed does for Elder Scrolls. While in separate universes, this feels like Obsidian’s take on an Elder Scrolls-esque game, and does so much more. Avowed is gorgeous and delightful, but equally grim and dark as its story unfolds. You needn’t play Pillars of Eternity to understand everything, but you’ll be inclined to after the credits roll. Avowed asserts itself into the pantheon of great first-person RPGs, offering best-in-class combat.
Avowed is an enjoyable adventure in a very colorful and distinct world, I just wish it was slightly less shallow.
At the end of the day, Avowed is what you make it. You can reflect on the choices you make as the Envoy, and examine what they might say about your views in the real world, and use them as learning opportunities. Or, you can just treat it as a cool fantasy game about gods and monsters – it’s your call. But whatever you take from it, Avowed is a solid RPG offering from a studio that clearly knows how to flex its narrative muscles, and who have leaned into their strengths hard to produce a game that might not be groundbreaking, but that will certainly make you think.
Avowed doesn’t branch out much, doing a lot in familiar ways to other RPGs, but does them well and will nevertheless deliver a fun-to-play, story-rich RPG experience.
Despite a few missteps, Avowed is a welcome addition to the RPG genre. It’s a world worth losing yourself in, filled with compelling stories, fascinating characters, and impactful choices.
Avowed is an intriguing fantasy RPG that is reminiscent of a smaller scale Skyrim but more welcoming for newcomers. The quality-of-life features are fantastic, even if the content leaves something to be desired.
Obsidian's latest isn't as groundbreaking and profound as Fallout: New Vegas (a very high bar to be honest), but it isn't short on exploration and combat. I'd say take a plunge into this magical fantasy romp if possible. At the very least, Xbox Game Pass owners have yet another free and awesome RPG experience to deal with for weeks and months to come.
This time, Obsidian has created a smaller, more focused RPG experience, and they absolutely nailed it. Your character truly feels like your own and playing as a godlike of an unknown deity is a fascinating premise. Best of all, the game succeeds of being both great and highly entertaining, and it’s so addictive that it’s hard to put down. I wouldn’t compare Avowed to Skyrim or anything else really, because the game manages to feel like its own unique thing, and it is designed to be played time and time again.

Avowed isn’t doing anything revolutionary, but it just does everything a little bit better. Avowed is dense, everything has purpose and most importantly, it gives the player freedom to approach the adventure how they want. Avowed is a game that has all the ingredients to be a cult classic and an RPG that people will bring up when discussing Obsidian's best games.
Avowed is so much more than Obsidian’s take on Skyrim. This game sets the standard for what future Western RPGs should strive for. Nearly every option in combat is worth exploring, the companions are fully fleshed out with backstories that beg to be uncovered, and the anti-imperialist message at the center of the larger narrative is full of thoughtful nuance and intrigue. Obsidian has created a wonderful adventure that I can’t wait to start playing again.
Avowed is not the deepest RPG of our generation, nor a game that will be remembered for its world-changing influence on the medium. Nevertheless, and despite its shortcomings, its gameplay doesn't fail to provide satisfying moments of entertainment.
It’s such a shame then that Avowed misfires on so many different levels. I wanted to love this game but every time I tried, Avowed showed off another aspect of its shallow game design that held it back from being a better game. The loot and progression systems are poor, while the game is so heavily focused on its magic-based combat, that everything else around it fails to impress. Much like its emotionless NPCs that stand around and do nothing, this is flat and devoid of life across the board. At its best, Avowed is aggressively average. At its worst, this is a shockingly shallow RPG with very little to offer players. Wait for a deep sale before you invest in this one.
Avowed is recommended because it is a solid bet within the RPG genre, with a well-written story, meaningful decisions and a world that invites exploration. It doesn't reinvent the genre, but it does offer an experience you'll love, especially if you are a lover of the Pillars of Eternity universe.

Avowed is an impressive release from Obsidian Entertainment, showcasing a strong RPG that shines in both combat and exploration. The Living Lands offers a delightful environment to explore, filled with hidden corners that provide satisfying rewards for discovery. Additionally, encounters with enemies are exciting, thanks to the engaging and intricate combat system. Sadly, it falls short of being something great, as the game has stripped down its RPG systems to an almost bare minimum, negatively affecting the immersiveness of its beautiful world. Cities and towns feel lifeless, and this sense of emptiness also extends to your companions due to the absence of systems that enable you to build meaningful relationships with them.
Avowed offers a strong atmosphere, colorful personalities, and a gameplay loop that is entirely serviceable. However, it fails to excel in any particular area, including the character-driven narratives that Obsidian are known for. And so, Avowed fails to fully deliver on its potential.
