Digimon Story Time Stranger excels in a lot of ways, especially with its ridiculous amount of Digimon that are great fun to experiment with. Although I'm a newbie to the series, I must admit that this lovely RPG adventure made me a fan.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a love letter to fans of the series, from both the anime and games. It delivers an exciting, event-filled story, easy-to-understand and enjoyable gameplay, and visuals well-suited to the digital world. Despite some weaknesses in character writing, the game offers vast and varied content, making it one of the best in the JRPG genre.

Gripes with side content aside, Digimon Story: Time Stranger is an incredible experience that has completely revitalised my faith in the monster-catching genre. With Pokemon seemingly stuck in a rut, due to what seems to be a complete refusal on Game Freak’s part to innovate within its mainline series, there is absolutely room for a deeper, more complex take on the genre for those looking for a more sophisticated alternative. Digimon Story: Time Stranger is that game, and I’m now incredibly excited for not only what comes next, but also to dig into the titles I’ve missed over the years in my ignorance.

With Digimon Story: Time Stranger, Media.Vision proves it can evolve the series and make it appealing to a broader audience. The blend of Persona-inspired mechanics, a wide variety of content, strong narrative focus, and impressive visual design makes this entry a true turning point for the franchise. The turn-based combat works beautifully, the animations shine, and the action-packed cutscenes add just the right cinematic flair, marking a triumphant return for the series — one not to be missed by Digimon fans and anyone who loves well-crafted JRPGs. Nevertheless, after the inevitable hours of grinding, one can’t help but feel that the game could have stood out even more had it dared to take a few creative risks, stepping away from well-trodden paths in favor of fresher, bolder ideas.

While the game immerses players in a mysterious journey blending reality and the digital world with diverse mechanics and captivating environments, certain design choices and structural issues prevent it from achieving perfection.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger was a welcome surprise. I knew so little of the franchise I expected to be confused more often than not. Instead, I found myself enjoying my time with these monsters. If you aren’t a completionist, you can expect to give up about 40ish hours of game time to get through the entire story. With monsters this cute and personable though, you may find yourself wanting to spend more time with them as you go.

After almost a decade of lackluster games, “Digimon Story: Time Stranger” brings not only a great Digimon game, but a great RPG. Although it has some slip ups in regards to its story and dungeon design, it more than makes up for it with its in-depth party mechanics and fantastic combat.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger won't be remembered as the JRPG of the year or a GOTY contender. But honestly, that's okay. Not all titles aspire to be top of the class. Sometimes, fortunately, there are productions that aspire to touch people's hearts, to reawaken memories and give them dreams. And Bandai Namco's title does just that. A real gift to fans of the franchise, an exciting adventure that is sure to thrill those who grew up on Digimon. Get ready for a journey through time: there's an apocalypse to prevent!

Digimon Story Time Stranger is a surprisingly deep JRPG. Its compelling story and complex, strategic gameplay are engaging, and raising Digimon is highly rewarding. Unfortunately, the game is held back by an outdated technical department, a result of its long development. However, it lays a solid foundation for the series' future and is a must-try for fans and JRPG lovers alike.

It’s clear the goal was to bridge the Digimon series into the JRPG sphere at a user-friendly entry point. The mechanics are simple enough to grasp, yet there’s plenty of customisation and challenge for seasoned veterans. The Storyline is richly detailed and the art and animation are, for the most part, fantastic. If you’re after a story-driven adventure or a Digimon-focused battle experience, Time Stranger has plenty to offer. Just be prepared for the head-spinning, dimension-hopping twists and turns and maybe switch on that 5x speed from time to time.
