Aside from those infrequent technical issues, this is a smooth, comforting, and narratively rich experience. Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth's balance of warmth and depth is everything I want from a cozy game in the modern era. I can already anticipate that I’ll be returning to the charm of Moominvalley in a few months, when the Lady of the Cold visits me as well.

Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth does what it came to do: criticize the injustice of winter existing at all. The game makes you reflect on existential dread, dedications to your partner, chores, and the adorableness of life as a whole. Some controls and mechanics could have been explained better, but this is a great, snowy, cozy game that adds some variety to a genre that's oversaturated with farm life.

Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth is a lovely game. There are some fun quests to undertake in locations that have been designed well, with the added bonus of cutting paths through the snow.

All in all, Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is a lovely exploration of a side of Moominvalley that fans rarely get to see. I had fun leading Moomintroll through the snow. Existing fans and new ones will have a great time with this game, too.

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is a heartfelt adventure that understands the magic of its storybook world. Jansson’s childhood series is rendered with such love and care that I quickly fell in love with the Moominverse. Hyper Games has very clearly treated the source material with great care and respect, creating an experience that feels made for longtime fans while also remaining warm and welcoming to newcomers. While the gameplay can feel repetitive at times and the firewood grind did sour my experience, it was still good to explore the snow-covered Moominvalley as the adorable Moomintroll to experience a winter that would send any Australian into shock.

Still, it’s beautifully produced and absolutely in line with the way that Jansson’s Moomin works ran. They’ve always left me wanting more, and I can’t wait until the next Moomin game comes my way.

A magical and charming adventure into a Moominvalley transformed by the elements, Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth puts Moomin at the fore in a whimsical story that always respects its source material. Subtle realignment of gameplay to suit Moomin and a continuation of every good aspect of its predecessor makes this wholesome treat of a game a wonderful cure for winter melancholy.

After the success of Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley, Hyper Games returns to the world of the Moomins, this time with a winter adventure in which Moomintroll is tasked with calling forth spring while completing side activities that are not always engaging, in another strong adaptation of Tove Jansson’s work.

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is about how small acts of kindness can drive out the cold and the fear that comes with it. It’s about opening your door and asking someone how you can help. While Moomin starts the game as a scared child, he discovers the warmth and joy that community can bring, but only when brought together through kindness.

Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth is a charming game that is sure to win the hearts of all Moomin fans, as well as anyone simply looking for a cosy, heart-warming game to take a break from the daily grind. Although it retains the style of the original work, it falls slightly short of its predecessor, leaving us feeling that it could easily have offered more.

It’s impossible to have a bad time playing Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth. Gorgeous artwork coupled with high-quality writing makes it genuinely feel like a storybook made interactive, without leaning too far in and making it incomprehensible to Moomin neophytes. It’s not breaking new ground as a video game by any means, but for anyone craving a low-stakes and thoughtful puzzle adventure, you can’t do much better than this.

A cute and cozy adventure with surprisingly dark moments at times. It's heavily based on Moominland Midwinter, but the game is enjoyable even without knowledge of the original work or series. PC version reviewed. Review copy provided by company for testing purposes.
