Brigandine Abyss is a clear step forward for the franchise's formula, but it's not yet a heavy-hitter strategy game.
All in all, this is a game designed for a niche audience that will love it. If you think Fire Emblem doesn’t have enough base building and Disgaea is only slightly too much of a number cruncher, Brigandine Abyss might be up your alley.
This isn't the sort of tactical RPG that leaves you rueing decisions you've made and mourning the allies you've lost. Brigandine Abyss is practically cosy at times, working much better as a satisfying but unremarkable grind than as a tense battle of wits. I was fine with that, and enjoyed it for what it was rather than what I wished it would be.
Combined with a frustrating, underwhelming story mode, you’re left with a game that has the potential for fun but does little else to make it a must-play game.
Brigandine Abyss is a deeply involved SRPG that is here to weed out the strategy dilettantes and reward dedicated. The fun here is in the planning, which is good, but the lack of focus on the actual turn-based combat means many will not stay with it for the hundreds of gameplay hours it offers.
Brigandine Abyss had the potential to be great, but it is held back by some issues that make it a disappointing follow-up to its predecessor.
Despite the wealth of content on offer, Brigandine Abyss never inspired me to play all of it. Its dated visuals, questionable design choices, a lack of story, and mundane repetition make this road to conquest more than a little bumpy. The mix of grand strategy and tactical gameplay, while approachable, is better coordinated in the series past entries than it is here.
Brigandine Abyss attempts to make the complex strategy/tactical RPG hybrid formula more accessible, but in doing so betrays the core ideas that made the series a cult hit.
BRIGANDINE ABYSS is an addictive time. You can organize a plethora of troops to accomplish a lot of goals all at once. Taking over the continent is a big swig of dopamine. It might have some edges that need to be sanded, but it is enjoyable.
Once you get a solid grasp of the tactics, resource management, and intricate systems the game leans on, Brigandine Abyss becomes a deeply rewarding experience. Just don’t expect the easy accessibility of a Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem, because this game has no interest in holding your hand.
Brigandine Abyss lost some of the series identity in exchange for its efforts to try and find a broader audience.

A title like Brigandine Abyss is a design nightmare. It takes two genres with a massive mental overhead cost and tries to make them both work in the same game. The result is a game that may not appeal to fans of either genre, but will be a must-buy for fans of both. For those who wanted Fire Emblem with more strategic freedom, this is the game, and for those who love Dynasty Warriors Empires but want more engaging combat, this is the ticket. Brigandine Abyss knows its niche extremely well.
I had a superb time with Brigandine Abyss in all of its strategic greatness on so many levels from large battles to an even larger war on top of carefully managing each one of your many combatants. Plus, there's a campaign that stars adorable fairies and that's pretty cool. ⚔️
Brigandine: Abyss is a very successful extension of a formula that has long remained one of the most interesting offerings for fans of Japanese turn-based strategy games.

Brigandine Abyss offers a surprisingly deep blend of tactical RPG combat and territory management, with satisfying army building, a clever Rally system, and a Mission Mode that greatly expands its long-term replayability. Weak enemy AI, repetitive Story Mode progression, awkward map restrictions, uneven scaling, and an initially overwhelming number of systems keep it from reaching its full potential, but even as a newcomer to the series I found it far more engaging than its mixed reception suggests.
