If you're looking for an old-school side-scrolling action game that's along the lines of Dark Souls in logic (but not necessarily tone), Rogue Legacy is a sweet addition to your library. It's hard as heck at times, but progress can eventually be felt for those who stick with it, and the retro-style presentation will be right at home with classic NES/SNES gamers. Just be prepared to cut your teeth on this one – because the enemies cut back.

Taking cues from multiple genres like RPGs and roguelikes, Rogue Legacy is an insanely creative, fun and addictive game that's full of humor and challenge.

Rogue Legacy has found a loving home on Switch. If you have played Rogue Legacy before, and want just a bit more of it in your life, a portable version is a great pick-up. If you have not tried it before, the Switch edition is a perfect entry point.

Rogue Legacy may not be the typical roguelike game but that doesn't mean there no advantages to that. In fact, this game goes beyond some of the genre's usual formulas and in a good way, allowing for some liberties with the progression that bring an additional level of motivation, even though some of the roguelikes' typical problems can still be found here.

Rogue Legacy is one of the shiniest gems to come out of the Steam Greenlight program – it really does a fantastic job of mixing the better parts of a Roguelike experience with a solid 2D platformer, with a whole lot of polish on top of it all.

Although it may seem like a daunting task at first, navigating this enormous castle and defeating the enemies within is a challenging and satisfying adventure often missing from modern games. Learning and mastering the controls while your character gets incrementally stronger will make you want to spend hours trying to get just a little bit further until can take on the bosses. Whether you have nostalgia for retro games, or are just curious about them, Rogue Legacy is a perfect entry point for newcomers.

I would go so far as to say that Rogue Legacy is the greatest Metroidvania game I have ever played. It may sound like an extremely controversial opinion, but as it stands, this definitely tops the list as far as I'm concerned.

Despite its designation as a "rogue-lite," Rogue Legacy delivers just as much addictive live-die-repeat challenge as any "full-fledged" members of the genre. Short of maxing out on every possible trait (an undertaking that would prove rather expensive in-game) the optional, RPG-style progression system never robs this roguelike's random dungeons of their punishing nature and need for patience, a thoughtful approach, and the occasional bout of luck.

Which all adds some persistent reward to what would otherwise be a ten-minute experience, repeated ad nauseam. You feel like you're moving forward tangibly instead of just merely growing your knowledge of the game, and with each boss only needing to be bested once, there's a strong sense of progressing through the game world past each playthrough, too. There's a slight monotony to the enemy design after some time, but each complaint we try to construct feels all but meaningless in the face of how pure and satisfying an experience Rogue Legacy manages to be.

Rogue Legacy harkens back to an older era of gaming. The art style is pixelated and colorful and the music is reminiscent of the more-limited chipsets of yesteryear. Akin to such games as 1001 Spikes and Dark Souls in difficulty, Rogue Legacy will give most players a run for their money, however, the slick progression system, rich sense of humor, and overall cadence of the game is perfect for hardcore gamers or those wanting to play in bits on a commute or with only a couple minutes of downtime.

Rogue Legacy does procedural generation right, offering countless hours of action, platforming, and exploration to anyone that's attracted to it. The amount of grinding that's present throughout the adventure does occasionally lead to stretches of monotony, but when every other facet of the game shines the way it does, it's not enough to massively damage its reputation.

Mind you, apparent lack of confidence aside, Rogue Legacy is still an essential game, and it's good to see the roguelike still getting so much traction, because it is a wonderful, versatile and ultimately entertaining RPG sub-genre.

Rogue Legacy is a unique game that will appeal to a specific set of gamers and probably frustrate the rest. Those who find it fun will enjoy it greatly, with hours of playability, fun aesthetics, and enough variety to ensure no two playthroughs are alike. Rogue Legacy is brutal, punishing even slight mistakes on the player's part, and demanding many, many attempts at getting even one room farther than the previous attempt at conquering the dungeon.

Rogue Legacy is not a casual game, it is one that requires you to put a lot of time and effort in to get the most from it, accept that you will make little progress early on and need to learn how best to approach certain scenarios, but those who are willing to put the time in, you will be handsomely rewarded.

Rogue Legacy is fundamentally sound but the stringent play pattern where you very slowly incrementally improve can make parts of this novel and fun platformer too slow for its own good. Thankfully the sheer polish of the platforming helps to transcend the issues more often than not. Even if you wind up slowing down and not saving the day, Rogue Legacy is a family trip worth taking thanks to cool ideas and a killer hook.

Rogue Legacy is an indelible game to play on the Switch. It has a very fast-paced, pick-and-play cycle to the action, which is perfect for experiencing on the go -and the seemingly endless puns and dad-jokes will make any cynical and tired gamer smirk warmly. This is one of the few indie titles which show the potential of rogue-lite game design and how it can be made appealing. While it may look a bit on the cheap side, it's is fun where it counts and is definitely recommended to every Switch owner.
