A basic platformer with the same old clichéd mobility tools and a pretty underwhelming world to be a part of just isn't enough to make its mark these days, making Shu feel a little played out. It's by no means a bad game, but hardly a good one too; it falls quite neatly into the comfortable, average middle-ground.
Yoshi's Island this is not, but it's a honest and cute (albeit very short) platform, with a handful of good ideas but a strange difficulty curve. If only it didn't play that safe, it could have been a first choice for Switch owners.

A game for the kids, an incredible game that doesn’t outstay its welcome. With a strong sense of style, Shu takes the action platformer genre into its own stride with ultra shine polish and melodic music that’ll warrant listening outside of playing the game. This is a game that’ll age well for its solid game play.
Shu is the ultimate example of how a game should take its desired platform and then shape it into the most perfect game that platform has seen.
Like I said in the opener Shu is yet another platformer that does enough different to capture my interest. I’m so thankful to the indie game space for still creating unique new platforming experiences like Shu. Its got its own unique gameplay elements and the art style is gorgeous and fun to look at. I was only disappointed when the game came to an end as it isn’t very long. Hopefully Coatsink will do more with Shu in the future as it’s absolutely something I’d love to see more of. For any fan of platformers however you can’t do much better than Shu this year.

I had an excellent time with the game for my Shu review. While the main game might be short, I loved every minute of it. The speedrunning side of the equation will greatly increase the replay value for the game as you try and complete each level as fast as possible, so do keep that in mind. If you’re looking for an excellent platformer, then Shu is the game you need to add to your collection today!
I loved my time with the game for my Shu review. It’s a very polished, colorful and fun platformer with plenty of replay value and a Platinum trophy to boot, so there’s definitely something in this one for all to enjoy. If you want to 100% the game, you’ll need to be patient and learn from your mistakes so that you can find all collectibles and complete every level with all miscellaneous requirements. But in the end, it will be worth the effort.
From the gorgeous, simple visuals to the ever-changing platforming, Shu is an excellent example of what a small developer can do to push the genre forward. For that reason, this game is worth a look for platforming fans.
In the end, Shu is a well-made platformer that is short but does many things right. It may not be the best, flawless or the most original game out there, but it's a fun and varied journey that's worth taking if you're fond of the genre.
While it never really shakes up the genre, it ticks all the boxes that platformer fans enjoy. Shu's main campaign doesn't last very long, just a handful of hours, but it's designed so that players will want to continue playing to find every collectible and improve their timing. If you're the kind of player that likes that sort of challenge, Shu may just be for you.
The game may not do too much more than tick the boxes of what one expects of a platformer, and stumbles a few times on level design and coherence, but the wrapping of the game is a masterfully neat bow that will really help to draw in an audience.

Recommended 2d-Platformer that offers something unique
The average time to play through the story of Shu is roughly four hours with additional hours if players are yearning for 100% completion. Shu is an attractive platformer game with straightforward goals but tedious chases. Players who are looking to pick up something quick between other games may want to catch a ride with Shu.
I mentioned at the beginning of the review that short length doesn’t mean a game fails to leave a lasting impact, and I left Shu pleased with my time. Even though I was able to beat the main game in less than an hour, and the DLC in about 20 minutes, I enjoyed every minute of my time with Shu. It’s charming, creative and accessible to all levels of gamer. While some may be discouraged by how quickly I beat the game, I would venture my speed is a bit unusual, as the devs confirmed most players beat the game in 3-4 hours. Regardless, Shu is a wonderful game and a delight on the Nintendo Switch. If you enjoy fun platformers or are just looking for something new on your console, I would recommend it strongly for only $9.99. I just hope it’s not the last we’ve seen of this vibrant game world.
Shu is a bit of a mixed-bag of a game, with its slow moving platforming elements - involving the collecting and uncovering of a myriad of secrets within each level - hampered by its haphazard camera. Conversely when the game is moving at speed, being able to stretch its wings as you speed run through its beautiful visuals, Shu fully comes alive with a rhythm brought about by games like the more recent Rayman Legends. If you’re a fan of the genre, and enjoy a beautiful platforming game with some challenge then Shu is definitely worth a look, but don’t go in expecting more than that.
Ultimately Shu is a bit of a strange beast; it’s probably not difficult or substantial enough to appeal to the Super Meat Boy crowd, but also perhaps a little too frustrating to rope in those craving a purely relaxing experience. The near-total lack of a story certainly does it no favours, but on the flip side, when this game really hits its stride, it can be ludicrously entertaining.
Shu is one of those titles that may not cause a great deal of excitement, but players who give it a chance will be rewarded well. It offers great gameplay, an atmospheric fairy world and a well-done audiovisual style. There really aren't many things that Shu could be reprimanded about. Throw away the prejudices and embark on this platform game that reminds you of how fun this genre can be.
