Koei Tecmo has done a remarkable job of telling the many stories of the many people that make Romance of the Three Kingdoms such a compelling book and period of history, and the beautiful cinematic consistency makes it the most perfect realisation of everything Koei Tecmo has been aiming for with this series since way back on the PlayStation 2.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is a very ambitious title. It tried to take a game, which has been operating as a series of mini-missions and make it into a true open-world experience. Do I feel it was successful? Yes and no. The game has all of the aspects of an open-world game, it's just a shame it also inherited all the flaws of one as well. However, the combat and gameplay mechanics I love from the franchise are here and everything has been expanded on to make it the biggest Dynasty Warriors game to date.

It’s a damn shame Monster Hunter: World is doing so well because, I believe, Dynasty Warriors 9 would otherwise be a worthy recipient of that mainstream boost early calendar releases - and often slightly more obscure titles - receive. Perhaps if Dynasty Warriors 10 gives us some shared world, multiplayer coop action…

Dynasty Warriors 9 is definitely a new start for the series and a big change to what we are used to playing in a Musou game. The new open world design completely changed how I approached the game, and I was thrilled to be done with the old menu system. Unfortunately, the graphics haven't changed much other than some visual improvements here and there. At the end of the day though I need to ask myself if I have had fun with the release, and the answer is a big yes. There are still things they can improve for the next entry in this long-running and beloved series, so here's hoping Dynasty Warriors 10 knocks it out of the park.

The open world, RPG elements and new battle system make Dynasty Warriors 9 the first refreshing entry in this old series. This is without a doubt the way to go for future games in the Dynasty franchise.

Whether a die-hard fan or a newcomer to the series, Dynasty Warriors 9 is sure to delight lovers of the hack and slash genre. The story is interesting enough to keep you playing, but the main focus will be on the combat. The open world aspect of the game gives you more freedom of choice, which players will appreciate. There are a few issues, but nothing too overwhelming.

The transition to an open world has not been easy, quite rough in fact. Still, Dynasty Warriors 9's many changes to the musou formula hold great promise for the future. This is the rebirth the series needed, regardless of its issues.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is a fun and fresh take of the series with the familiar 1 vs 1000 action people expect but frame rate issues and no multiplayer component keep it from reaching it's full potential.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is a game that, despite some problems in this first attempt in the series to make an open world game, establishes a great way to retell its story, reinventing very well the combat system and bringing the series closer to an RPG, thus marking a great step forward for the franchise.

Dynasty Warriors 9 tries to be an overhaul among all of the games that share the "one man against thousand" formula. But it is more of a major upgrade than an overhaul. Dynasty Warriors 9 is an exciting and definitive buy for those who are new to the series or are returning to it after a long absence. But for its loyal fans and those who had their fair share of the "one man against thousand" formula, Dynasty Warriors 9 is just another game in the series without any significant value

Overall, Dynasty Warriors 9 gets an 8/10, the main gameplay is fun with plenty of new additions to the mechanics alongside the ever-increasing units the games are able to display at once. The voice acting is way below the bar, the story is rehashed like normal, the separate stories feel too similar to one another with some being shortened and the map feels underutilised most of the time. You will also find yourself repeating the same task over and over with their quest system telling you to kill nearby troops that spawn out of thin air or to bring a hide to a villager.

Overall, Dynasty Warriors 9 is a great game filled with memorable battles and great characters. The open-world direction was the best idea; and so far, with its huge map that's almost impossible to explore in one day, the number of characters packed in the game with unique stories and playstyles, this is the most ambitious Warriors game ever. I doubted the game at the beginning as I thought that it would just end up the same like its predecessors, but Dynasty Warriors 9 proved me wrong. This is a huge step up for the franchise, despite its flaws, Dynasty Warriors 9 gave me a hell of a ride.

Even with my issues, I love this game. I wish it would be more polished than it is, and I wish the voices were what I remember, but I’m still having a lot of fun with it. The combat is engaging enough, the story is still quite good, and the open world lets you explore and just do whatever you want in. Will this actually entice new players into the series? I don’t think it’s got enough there to change the stigma surrounding Warriors games but for existing fans this one not to miss.

Musou style games often struggle to stand out from the rest of the pack as a result of the similar gameplay and mission structures. Dynasty Warriors 9 goes against this trend by managing to expand on the typical musou formula with a big open world experience for the first time in the series that pairs well with the familiar gameplay and story, which all combine to make a very enjoyable game that are built for veterans and newcomers alike.

So, an open world Dynasty Warriors. One certainly must commend Omega Force for constantly trying to innovate with their games rather than just churn out the exact same thing with marginally improved graphics with every installment. However, as the most recent in a long-running series, it begs the question: should you buy this one with all of it's faults or should you just stick with the last one, which sticks closer to the formula that made the games so beloved? Well, that depends on what you're looking for. The combat is a lot smoother than in the past games, and though the characters can be a tad one-note and the dialogue can be a tad wooden there is more of an effort to show rather than tell, and of course the graphics have vastly improved. At the same time, the pace of the game outside of the combat is a lot slower, the voice acting really could use improvement, and of course the change of genre leaves just the one game mode and no local multiplayer. It feels more like an adventure than a war, which I'm sure would excite some fans while disappointing others. However, I'm not here to review the entire franchise, I'm here to review this one game. So for a moment let's erase all comparisons to past games. How is Dynasty Warriors 9 as it's own singular entity? Well, it certainly has it's faults, but it's definitely a ton of fun if a tad easy for an open world RPG. The combat is smooth and satisfying, the farming and crafting aspects may not be electrifying but they aren't annoying, the map is pretty large, and even the story and dialogue has the camp and occasional hilarity of one of those foreign B-movies you find on netflix so you grab some friends and a pizza and have a jolly good time laughing it up at the unintentional hilarity. Even the stuff in here that could annoy some, like the homemaking and the gathering, isn't something the game forces you to do, so you can just ride around like the unstoppable war machine you are. While the game may be a tad lackluster as far as being an entry in this particular series goes, as a game in it's own right I think Dynasty Warriors 9 is definitely worth checking out when it goes on sale. It has some good aspects, has some hilariously bad aspects. I can recommend it, but 60 bucks is a bit steep for B-movie camp. Aside from that, I think it's definitely a game to check out.

Dynasty Warriors offers a plethora of playable characters, large-scale battles, and a feeling of godhood as you smash through scores of enemies with a single thing. What more could you ask for from a Warriors game?
