A genius blend of two very different genre, coming together to form an extremely addicting dungeon crawler with a musical motif. Oh, and the soundtrack is absolutely kickass.

That's the ultimate result of NecroDancer's genre experimentation: an invitation. An invitation to strap on your dancin' shoes, let the beat seep into the hole where your heart used to be, and follow the siren sound deeper and deeper into the dark.

Crypt of the NecroDancer accomplishes what few games even attempt to do. It merges together two completely different genres: rhythm and roguelike. The frustrations of both come as part of the package, but some intelligent design decisions help to alleviate the issue. For those looking for the next gaming obsession after the likes of Spelunky, Binding of Isaac, or Rogue Legacy, look no further than Crypt of the NecroDancer.

Don't let its electro beat fool you. Crypt of the NecroDancer belongs in a jazz club, a live, imperfect performance, sometimes fumbling and sometimes transcendent, where preparation can become improvisation with an audience shouting "go, that's right, go!"

Overall, however, Crypt of the Necrodancer is a solid game that is easily recommendable to just about anyone. Although it consists of twelve brief levels, each of these levels are randomly generated and, if you want, can be played to your own custom music, rather than the game's own soundtrack. The game's ability to map out the rhythm of whatever song you select from your music library is great, but it's highly recommended that you select songs that have distinct rhythm and manageable tempos (My attempt at playing the game using Fredrik Thorendal's Herr Faust, for example, ended in complete disaster). This well-thought out element of the game ensures that players will have potentially unlimited amounts of replay from this indie game, and with Steam Workshop support, there's so much that can be done within Crypt's simple but effective gameplay. Crypt of the Necrodancer is a fine, fine game that serves as yet another example of what game developers can do when they are free to take creative risks and try new things out, and as such, it deserves both your time and money.

With an interesting rhythm-based gameplay mechanic and innovative gameplay that works perfectly with the brilliantly-engineered soundtrack, Crypt of the Necrodancer is the best roguelike I've played so far this year.

There's never a dull moment: Brace Yourself Games have created an experience where there is a lot to think about in terms of strategy, movement, enemies, traps and maintaining multipliers. However, the constant pull of Baranowsky's compelling soundtrack always keeps things moving, encouraging the player to think on their toes and adapt to the situation at hand.

Crypt of the Necrodancer offers just about every feature imaginable, and each one is executed absolutely masterfully.  It's wholly unique and provides a tension found nowhere else, offering up some rhythm to the roguelike genre just as it started to feel like it was getting stale.

Crypt of the Necrodancer is an innovative roguelike experience that deserves praise for its rhythm-matching system as well as for its mechanics that add replayability and encourage players to keep going even during the most difficult of stages. However, if you want to unlock more characters and really enjoy the game, prepare to spend a lot of time with it.

The will to power seems incongruous with impulsive action, but it's through this passage of devilish irony that Crypt of the NecroDancer thrives. It's the acquired and applied knowledge of a roguelike against the demanding drive of a rhythm game, and yet Crypt of the NecroDancer escapes the gaze of a simple curiosity and leaps to an ideal hybrid of two disparate genres.

This game deserves attention. It's a good addition to the rogue-like, and nobody else is going to get a chance to make rhythm-based games like this again. The bar's set pretty high after this.

I've been in a bit of a gaming funk recently, but Crypt of the NecroDancer has reminded me how creative, original, and fun video games can be. I've switched it off at 2 a.m. more than once this week, forcing myself to break from a dangerously addictive "one more go" loop as I tried in vain to beat the damn thing.

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a fast paced dungeon crawler that brilliantly blends rhythm based mechanics into a chimeric roguelike that can entertain you for hours. If you manage to master the music you will be rewarded with engaging combat, a plethora of items to use and an addictive adventure that you can sink your teeth into. However if the beat breaks you down then this game is nothing more than a heartache.

Every moment of Necrodancer is fun and engaging, the music is some of the best original music in any rhythm game, and the entire experience feels very original.
