Maid of Sker Reviews
We may still have a few heavy hitters of horror dropping later this year, but as of now, Maid of Sker remains at the top of 2020 for me, and hopefully, others will feel the same after spending some time with it.
Maid of Sker is a competent horror adventure where the player explores a well-designed 19th-century hotel. But its clumsy stealth, forgettable puzzles, and lukewarm scares prevent it from hitting the high notes.
Overall, Maid of Sker is a decent horror game. If you’re looking for a good scare, then this is a game worth trying. It’s good for those who aren’t into horror games that rely on jump scares to deliver the horror. That being said, it does come with its own problems. Namely on the technical side. Frame rates and constant pop-ins were a hassle to have to go through. But hopefully, you’ll never have to experience that on your end.
While it may not be the most exotic horror establishment out there, I could think of worse places to visit than the Sker Hotel right now.
Survival horror may be one of the most tricky genres I’ve seen to really make a quality game in...
Maid of Sker gives a great deal that is progressed nicely, and I will appreciate frightfulness aficionados, for example, myself. However, the hindrances, for a few, are possibly more than worth managing.
If you’re looking for a game that’ll make you afraid to turn out the lights, Maid of Sker is for you. The constant fear of bumping into something and alerting the blind bag-heads makes the game very tense and nerve-wracking. This enhanced edition provides silky-smooth gameplay, immersive DualSense controller support, upgraded visuals, and introduces us to the new Challenge Mode, although having a gun doesn’t make the experience any less frightening or anxiety-inducing. Considering the game is only £19.99 for both versions, I highly recommend you pick this up if you like horror games – it’ll scare the pants off you!
Maid of Sker follows Thomas Evans as he travels to Sker Island to rescue his lover Elisabeth from her controlling father, who has locked her away in their family hotel. On arrival, it soon becomes clear that something has gone horribly wrong…
A spectacular looking thriller, this a horror game that you must try, it presents a good challenge in the few hours it lasts, but it seems to capture your attention for the whole ride. The game flows you into the story with a very solid pace.

I am a big fan of dark and creepy games. They don’t need to be horror necessarily, but that dark, melancholy atmosphere, the creaking floorboards of an old house, or the shadows moving between the trees. Then you combine that with a story based in fact on a real place and draws inspiration from several different sources.
It’s a terrible shame that a game that was initially brimming with potential squanders quite a lot of it by the time that it’s almost over. More so when considering that the story is actually quite good and it has some clever moments towards the end. There’s definitely a good game here buried beneath some dodgy ideas that can make playing Maid of Skar feel like a chore at times.
Maid of Sker is an indie horror game that despite its interesting plot fails to stand out from the myriad of similar games out there.

Despite mediocre graphics, Maid Of Sker makes the player shiver, especially because of the successful sound effects. The boring gameplay, on the other hand, doesn't really motivate to play a second round.

Maid of Sker could have been great, but a plethora of problems ruin it.
A very atmospheric horror game that suffers from technical issues and punishing checkpoints. The unsettling story based off welsh folklore is worth pushing through the adversities nonetheless. As far as first-person horror goes, this isn’t the best choice, but it’s also far from the worst.

Maid of Sker sadly doesn’t stand out in the crowd of other horror adventures. The story’s best moments take place in notes found and environments, but as cohesive and engaging as they are, this isn’t a technical marvel. The blending of puzzle-solving and horror-adventure just doesn’t end up working with the stealth elements, and instead makes it feel like it should have been two different games. Luckily, the experience doesn’t overstay its welcome and can be completed in around 6 hours.
Maid of Sker has a surprising focus on stealth gameplay, but in every other way, it's just a standard horror adventure game like dozens of others.

Maid of Sker is filled with promise and great ideas, however remains in the shadow of the games it’s so heavily influenced from.
It's on its own merits the best horror game from Wales Interactive, positioning itself as an interesting and terrifying experience of Wales in the late 19th century.

Maid of Sker might not be the scariest horror game out there, but the tense moments, sound-based gameplay design, and intriguing story come together to form a solid horror experience nevertheless.
