Do you ever wonder if there is life out in the vast expanse of space? It’s a question that has been asked time and time again, and one that lies at the heart of new psychological horror game, Sanity of Morris. Yet it doesn’t ask you to believe if anything is up there but down here, walking among us. To some, that’s a scary prospect, especially if extraterrestrial life doesn’t want to be our friend. But where I expected Sanity of Morris to tap into this fear, I instead found a genuinely fascinating story that had me hooked from start to finish.
The board game Connect Four is a staple for household board game fans. It has inspired many companies to produce similar titles over various platforms. Four in a Row attempts to replicate this classic formula while adding a simple twist. Instead of only being able to insert tokens from the top of the array, the player can insert pieces from all four sides.
Cathedral is a side-scrolling platformer. It is a Metroidvania, meaning there are several collectibles to collect throughout an expansive world. As the protagonist, a nameless knight, travel through snowy mountains, undersea caverns, and abandoned mines with a mission to demolish a demi-god named Ardur.
Games in recent years are becoming more of a hodge-podge of genres and that, in my opinion, is a good thing. Take Dead ground, for example, layout a tower defence game, spread it with an even layer of rogue-like and sprinkle it with a little bit of twin-stick shooter. Hmmm, tasty. In all fairness, though I do like developers to try new things and I commend them for doing so. These weird, risky decisions mainly come from the indie space of video gaming and that is why I like indie games so much. They are not afraid to push the proverbial boat out.
It’s dark, it’s foggy and there is blood on the streets. Welcome to Black Legend on the Nintendo Switch, a tactical turn-based combat title with a few twists on the usual tropes of the genre. Think of it like ‘ye olde X-Com with an emo makeover.’ A strange, madness-inducing fog has crept over the city of Grant and it is up to you and a team of capable mercenaries to aid the struggling resistance and eliminate the devastating fog.
After a few choices of character customisation, I arrived at Olive Town and was met by the Mayor who welcomed me to the community, introduced the locals and let me know of his big plans for the future of the town: the desire for an influx of tourists. It just so happens that I had been chosen to play a big part in the Mayor’s grand plans. Over the last few years, we have seen some exceptional Metroidvania games take the spotlight. If you’ve been to university, the chances are that at one point, pasta was your go-to base for a cheap meal. Even now, the versatility of pasta makes it an ever-present food item in my home, and to see a game created entirely about a sentient piece of spaghetti therefore intrigued me. Freddy Spaghetti follows Freddy as he comes to terms with his reality as a living piece of pasta, and documents the havoc he causes in the past, present, and future. Dr. P Starr soon comes to regret his actions in creating Freddy, and endeavours to stop him before it’s too late to save humanity.
I have vague memories of playing the original Ghosts n Goblins on my NES back when I was but knee-high to a grasshopper. I hated it. It was impossibly difficult, and I was a kid. Years later, when NES Online came along, Ghosts n Goblins was the first game that I fired up. It brought back so many memories, but also so many new experiences. I got further than I ever did as a kid, and the game was insanely good fun.
I’m a fan of silly little games that utilise chaotic physics systems and ridiculous gameplay mechanics. They offer an experience that’s a little bit different to the norm. I’ve spent a ton of hours with Goat Simulator and it still gets plenty of laughs out of me. I also have fond memories with the likes of Surgeon Simulator and Octodad: Dadliest Catch. Sure, they may not be the most polished of gameplay experiences, but that was part of the charm.

While we’ve had monster truck games in the past across a bevy of platforms, Monster Truck Championship prides itself by being a racing sim to the core in order to offer racing and monster truck fans a (virtual) realistic experience of driving a big ol’ monster truck. Mercenaries Blaze: Dawn of the Twin Dragons is the fifth instalment of the Mercenaries series that’s been released onto the Nintendo Switch. It’s a turn-based strategy RPG that takes place on an isometric grid. Whilst this doesn’t sound particularly unique, what sets Mercenaries Blaze apart from its competitors is a vast story and fairly interesting characters.
I have always been a fan of zero-g racing games. Titles like Wipeout and Extreme-G were big players in my childhood, nothing else matched the neon rush or mind bending speed of the genre. Now R8 Games are getting into the race with PACER, but will it rise to the challenge or slide off the track?
