Nintendo Blast's Reviews

CONVERGENCE: A League of Legends Story is a Metroidvania that fails to leave its unique identity and goes far from becoming an unmissable experience, but it would be wrong to say that the title is not quite pleasant for what it is. With an interesting cast of characters, a vibrant and different aesthetic and a series of moments in which the gameplay is quite creative and competent, it is not that difficult to recommend the title for someone looking for a new game of the genre for their collection. Performance issues on the Switch and a certain amount of thematic repetition during gameplay can get in the way, but they are not strong enough reasons to prevent most players from testing this adventure.

Though a few plot details sound a little too forced, Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2 is a perfect evolution of its predecessor. The return of the kids to the battlefield is a much heavier experience and represents a significant quality leap for the narrative and gameplay, making this a must-play for RPG fans.

8.5 / 10.0 - ghostpia Season One
May 28, 2023

ghostpia Season One offers five chapters that make a complete plot. Analyzing it from a narrative standpoint, it's hard to describe this visual novel as the impact of the themes it works with will vary from player to player, but, overall, the story is satisfactory and intriguing, with the right amount of drama and comedy. The audiovisual choices are, certainly, the high point of ghostpia, though the lack of choices during the narrative and the confusing menu navigation may chase away some players who prefer more interactive visual novels. In the end, for those who like a dense and introspective reading, but well connected, here is a game that manages to hold your attention for hours without rest.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom reaffirms that the Breath of the Wild formula is here to stay. Even reusing much of its predecessor, the game achieves its own identity, bringing new possibilities to the player to face the challenges through the enormous versatility provided by the new abilities. The sense of discovery and curiosity at all times, be it the versatile abilities or the expansion on the Y-axis of the map, was enough to trap me in Hyrule once again for countless hours — and I still have no intention of stopping.

Monster Menu: The Scavenger’s Cookbook brought the idea of surviving in a dungeon eating only monsters, insects and plants found inside it to the game world. The concept is something that still has ample room in the market and the game even manages to be a little fun but its slow progression, lack of narrative, lack of remarkable characters and excessively repetitive cycle end up hindering it, making it a game I'd only recommend to fans of the genre but, even then, there are other games of its style that will bring more satisfaction with the time you invest in them.

7.5 / 10.0 - Bat Boy
May 22, 2023

Featuring a lot of fun in the platformer format, Bat Boy is a pleasant surprise in the Switch's indie library. Despite the performance problems that can be frustrating for hindering progression, there is a lot of quality in this action adventure, which hits a real home run with its creative concept that explores sports superheroes.

Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! shows the bubble-blowing dinosaurs' puzzle in excellent shape. With good challenges, varied stages and multiplayer for up to four players, this is an easy recommendation for any player who wants to dive into the world of match-3.

7 / 10.0 - LOST EPIC
May 16, 2023

LOST EPIC doesn't have any serious problems, but the repetition of enemies and secondary missions makes it not stand out as much. The very agile and non-punitive combat may alienate soulslike lovers, but also bring hack 'n' slash enthusiasts closer. Finally, there is a visual effort that gives the title a certain charm and identity, making the journey more memorable.

9 / 10.0 - Strayed Lights
May 15, 2023

Strayed Lights is short, sweet and especially a highlight in the experience it offers to players. Its unique block/parry combat system brings something new to the table, and I loved almost every instance of it, especially in the big boss battles spread throughout the journey.

In sum, Winter’s Wish: Spirits of Edo is an average title that may even be worth playing if you're interested in some character or have few options for your next translated otome to read, but I question the choice of localizing this specific visual novel, as there are many games in Otomate's catalogue better in both romance and narrative. Unfortunately, Winter’s Wish's story doesn't manage to be a highlight in battles or the relationships with the boys.

7 / 10.0 - Mugen Souls
May 10, 2023

The fanservice and the narrative focused almost entirely on humor make Mugen Souls even more of a niche game. Despite that, for those who aren't bothered with these aspects, there's a rich and fun combat system, allowing the player to reach immeasurable strength levels and facing equally powerful enemies.

8.5 / 10.0 - Wild Dogs
May 9, 2023

Overall, Wild Dogs is a very competent game that bets on some gameplay variety. Though this decision was a good choice, the long stages with no checkpoints make the title a little annoying and the excessive focus on the nostalgia factor reduces the originality feeling in this work. Even so, with its fair difficulty and the general technical competence, this is an easy recommendation for retro fans.

The hard truth is that Super Dungeon Maker is incomplete. It's clear that there's massive potential in the idea behind a "Zelda Maker", but it takes a lot more effort and polish to make the premise work really well for this style of play. It is hoped that with the arrival of future updates all problems involving the lack of tools and content will be resolved, because at the moment Super Dungeon Maker is still nothing more than a great promise that can only please the most assiduous fans of the classic Zeldas.

There are specific points for someone to prefer the previous versions but overall the Final Fantasy I~VI in this version are superior in various aspects such as translation, music, and the visual upgrade (albeit a little modest). Overall, despite the simplicity in narrative and level design in the first titles of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster and its scenery already showing their age, these Final Fantasy [games] still deserve [the chance] to be played for their historical and conceptual importance, and some of them (especially Final Fantasy VI) remain among the best games in the series. The collection is recommended for fans of the series who wish to rediscover its roots and it's also accessible for newcomers who wish to start the saga of the warriors of light chronologically.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is not for everyone, it is aimed at the fans of tactical turn-based strategy games. But if that's your thing, this is a must-try title for the Nintendo Switch. In addition to the satisfaction of reliving these classics, there is hope for a remake of the games in the series released for the Nintendo DS.

Though simple and a little uninteresting in its narrative and game design and some decisions that hinder progression in the game, Labyrinth of Zangetsu has a unique and elegant Japanese painting visual design and it works well as a traditional dungeon crawler, especially considering the customization and traps variety as well as its consistent medieval/folkloric setting. The title is recommended to those looking for a traditional-style dungeon crawler that's not too long and has a distinctive, oriental visual.

Bramble: The Mountain King is a horror adventure that knows what it's doing. Its world-building based on Nordic culture is impeccable, presenting mythological stories and characters to an audience that most likely did not know or had so much contact with them. Balancing mediocre platforming with simple puzzles, limited exploration, creative battles and an atmosphere that successfully manages to be scary and beautiful at the same time, this short little game doesn't prolong its stay, knowing how to stop while it is still on top.

I think resources such as alegories, moral lessons, fanservice and references can be used to enrich what is already pleasant and not to make something good. Thus, these elements are not enough to null plot or direction issues in a movie, narrative issues in a book or even a shallow gameplay in a game. For that reason, Lost Dream Darkness ends up not having big merits because, though it left me intrigued and thoughtful, it failed a lot as a game.

Dokapon Kingdom: Connect is a really fun board game, different from other options on the market thanks to its RPG style and characters of all kinds and shapes. It has its flaws, mainly regarding the lack of more explanatory tutorials, small graphical glitches, lack of voices in Japanese, long games and questionable leveling of the computers. Still, it's a game worth investing in if you want a new game to play both online with faraway friends and just an activity to spend your weekends with your family and friends offline.

6.5 / 10.0 - Magical Drop VI
May 2, 2023

Magical Drop VI offers a good return to the series but makes a significant blunder on balancing. The Story Mode experience especially ends up unnecessarily frustrating and there are other polishment issues that deserve fixes in future updateds but fans of this long-standing franchise will feel at home.
