On the whole, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a decent collection. It doesn’t try to impress with extra features or fancy padding; it simply puts three games from the past in a simple collection for old fans to enjoy.

Playing three classic Mario games on the Switch is great, but I wish the collection could have offered a little more

Little effort was put into modernizing Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and somehow, that's still more than enough.

Whilst these are great games, this isn’t a great collection. With almost no extras, very little tweaking of the games for the Switch and no Super Mario Galaxy 2 this just isn’t quite what I’d hoped for. I’m still enjoying the games, but for many people this won’t represent particularly great value. If you don’t already have the games then get it. If you do, you might want to give it some thought first.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars offers the best versions available for Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy, introducing them to new players on the widely adopted Switch and helping to keep the games around for posterity. It’s a bit of a downer that Super Mario 64 isn’t the much-improved version we’ve had on the DS, but I’ll take it as a nice nostalgic bonus in what is otherwise an amazing collection of games.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is disappointing on the technical front while offering an immense gameplay potential. For fans of Super Mario Bros., there is absolutely no reason to skip on this collection.

Overall, it’s safe to say that Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a compilation worth its weight in gold. Not only have the games stood the test of time, they remain some of the best 3D platformers of the late ‘90s to early 2000s in existence. Between its visual resolution upgrades to the sheer flexibility of ways to play, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is the triple threat of the Nintendo Switch games’ library – well, until 31st March.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is brimming with charm and fun. It's surprising that these games released so long ago because they have held up beautifully and thoroughly prove Nintendo's brilliant level of creativity over the years. Here's hoping for many more games to come!

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a great way to celebrate the past and whether you're a new or old friend of Super Mario, this collection is a greatest hits collection of 3D Super Mario titles. Aside from missing Super Mario Galaxy 2, it's hard not to recommend this to anyone. It's a little lite on bonus features but you do get the soundtracks to each title.

The (dry) bones of Super Mario 3D All-Stars are impeccable - three of the best games ever made, spruced up for one of the best consoles ever made.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars offers one of the best collection of Super Mario Games ever made, even if the upgrades and presentation of the whole collection could have deserved a lot more love for details. If you wanna experience Super Mario Sunshine and Galaxy in its best form yet, you should definitely get this.

“Super Mario 3D All-Stars” is a great trip to the past and feels like coming coming again. Even though “Super Mario 64” certainly shows its age, all three “Super Mario”-adventures are very well worth your time and your money.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact this collection exists. I love that I can play these classic Mario games on-the-go. They are still ridiculously fun. But I can’t help but feel annoyed with the lack of effort put into this collection. It just feels lazy. We are paying sixty dollars for emulated ROMs, available for a limited time only, with little to no quality of life improvements. This sets a very bad precedent for the future.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a flawed port but includes an exceptional collection of games. It offers a good stopgap between the next 3D Mario and should be a delight for fans of the Italian plumber.

This is Nintendo’s love letter to Mario fans around the world and despite minor issues I have with each title’s translation to the hybrid handheld-home console, it will be one I will treasure forever.

So rather than looking at what this collection could have been, it’s easier and simpler to see what’s here and decide if that’s enough for you. If one of these games is an all-time favorite, that even these marginal adjustments make them the best and most convenient versions could make a sale for you. There’s nothing here to “fix” them if you didn’t like them the first time.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a collection of three of the most genre-defining releases in 3D platformer history. It brings these games together and makes them easily accessible to give gamers a chance to experience these titles for the first time or the hundredth. I’m left wishing that there was more included with the releases such as additional options or extras, but it’s undeniable that this is a must-play for Switch owners.

If you’ve never played any of these Mario games, go ahead and take the plunge, but if you’re somebody looking for more, consider voting with your wallet and make Nintendo realize devoted fans deserve more than this. There are other compilation packs of great games with more effort put in for much less than $60.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a limited time release in both physical and digital formats. We can only guess at the reason but whatever misgivings you have about the nature of the collection – or its position as Nintendo’s big fall release – it’s still an essential purchase. The three included games look better than ever and provide hours and hours of exquisitely designed, eye-bleedingly inventive gameplay.
