Proof that the franchise has great potential for growth outside the bounds of its traditional mechanics.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a great JRPG that doesn't reinvent the wheel, but offers everything the best games in the genre should.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a great and appealing offer for both Monster Hunter and JRPG fans in general. The combats are always intense, the narrative is captivating, and despite implementing so many complex systems and game mechanics, it manages to do it in such a balanced way that it manages to provide an intuitive and pleasurable experience. It's a pity the myriad of technical problems and some artificial intelligence problems hampered this experience, which is still highly recommendable.

The combat system is surprisingly deep and read-oriented, which can be a lot of fun. Despite how simple it is in concept and on paper, there are legitimately hard fights that can challenge a player’s mind, even just a bit.

Monster Hunter Stories 2 is a solid and thoroughly entertaining turn-based RPG. As long as you can put up with some bad jokes and relatively low difficulty, there's a lot of fun to be had here.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a more ambitious effort than its predecessor and it brings us a vast, open world, with a gorgeous art style, a great combat system, heavy emphasis on the plot and a great variety of creatures to capture. The experience is far from perfect, though, as its technical performance doesn't always go as expected. On top of that, the game world feels rather empty, despite this being more ambitious than the first game. Regardless of that, it's a very welcome addition to the Nintendo Switch offer on monster capture games.

MONSTER HUNTER STORIES 2 presented a fun and beautiful fighting system and a fascinating world with a very nice cartoonish drawing. Its biggest drawback was the repetition of discovery areas, trenches and online, but all of this did not prevent me from enjoying it, as it gave me a very nice experience as a fan of the series, and the addition of new content each month is keeping things fresh.

For fans of the RPG genre, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a mostly enjoyable experience. Sometimes the mission structure can drag, and some players are bound to find Navirou a bit irritating. However, the game's highlights definitely make up for the slower moments. This is a really solid RPG that gives the player freedom to go at their own pace. It also has a fun combat system, and charming story moments. For those that can look past its slight stumbles, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin should hold a lot of appeal, regardless of the player's familiarity with the franchise.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin runs fine on the Nintendo Switch - the monsters are a highlight, and the rest of the game is okay. That’s the real problem. That’s the real shame. That’s the real missed opportunity.

That said, Stories 2 might end up being the game I get the closest to a "perfect game" in. There's plenty to play with here, and honestly I'd like to double back and check out the original to fill in some of the gaps in the story. This JRPG July is off to a pretty good start.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a charming and enjoyable little RPG that is geared toward Monster Hunter fans who are looking for something with a slower pace. The story and tone may be a tad childish for some, but it works well for the characters. The strong core combat system buoys some lackluster dungeons and a generic story. It's a chill RPG for Monster Hunter fans and a pretty good introduction to the franchise for newcomers, especially younger children who may be frustrated by a traditional Monster Hunter title.
