Sonic Origins does an excellent job with its presentation, bonus content, and modernizations of classic games. On the other hand, I wish more games were included even if they didn't get the royal treatment that the 4 titles here did.

Sonic Origins is a reimagination of the classic Sonic series which applies some modernized ideas. For a series franchise that had lived just over 30 years, it’s another opportunity for the dev team to look back and reminisce of the basics. Just like most compilation packaged games, there is plenty of content to find and check out. With the addition of record keeping leaderboards for each stages and corners, the dev team’s vision has finally acknowledged the voices of the Sonic community. Sonic Origins would by far be the best addition to the library of Sonic games collection, for all Sonic fans since the classic days.

As someone who has adored the Sonic the Hedgehog games since I can remember, Sonic Origins’ Anniversary Modes of these classic games is the absolute best way to experience these titles.

Long story short: if you're not an avid collector of the Blue Blur, Sonic Origins is a good place as any to start with the best Sonic games available. [...]As for the rest who has seen a lot that's offered by Sega back in the day up to now? You could do worse.

When Sonic Origins was first announced, I honestly thought it was going to be the single most pointless re-release in the history of pointless Sega re-releases. Even though its dumb DLC packs are absurd, the compilation itself is excellent. This is the single best way to play all of the Mega Drive-era Sonic games with tons of extra features and quality of life improvements. It basically justifies its existence as something more than a mere cash grab to celebrate the franchise’s (belated) 30th anniversary.

As a compilation on its own, Sonic Origins is still a neat albeit slightly overpriced package that sums up most of the very best Sonic games you could ever play in new and improved forms, maintaining their original incarnations for preservation’s sake. While the historical documentation could’ve been better, the unlockables contained within are neat in their own way and provide plenty of reason to keep playing. On the other hand, it’s sad to see the path that Sega took in trying to make certain that this is the only reasonable and legit way to play old Sonic games, an approach that might serve as a preview to how future compilations might be handled – a scary proposition to be sure to any retro fan who doesn’t wish to resort to less savory means of playing some bonafide 16-bit classics such as these.

Sonic Origins not only includes four of the best platformer/adventure games of all times but it is also presented in a modern package with new bells and whistles to make it more than worthy of the price of admission. This is a great collection that gives every one a chance to experience a very important part of the video gaming's history.

Sonic Origins is undeniably fun with faithful recreations of the original games that represented the peak of the franchise. It, however, loses its momentum with unnecessary DLC that taints an otherwise charming love letter that celebrates 30 years for everyone’s favorite blue hedgehog.

While it hits a few snags, Sonic Origins is a compilation that runs with absolute confidence in itself. Smooth gameplay and smart new features make for the best ways to experience each of these games. Sonic might be 31 years old, but with this collection, it looks like he hasn’t aged a day.

While Sonic Origins does little to innovate or make this set of ports stand out besides some forgettable Museum unlockables and some nice new artwork, it remains a perfectly fine addition to the accessibility of classic Sonic games on modern consoles. I wish it were not at the expense of the ability to purchase them individually from older ports; however, even with its flaws, it’s as fun as these games have ever been.

Sonic is back to tread in his past in a compilation that feels a bit too familiar for its own good.

Sonic Origins is an experience aimed at fans of the series and classic games, although it does not add much to the improved version, but I enjoyed the old experience again.

Sonic Origins is a fun romp and a trip back in time to when things were simpler. Getting some of the best Sonic games out there in one package is a sweet deal, and that alone should be worth the purchase. You’re also getting an Anniversary Mode to go with it, which adds some nifty features that shake up the gameplay experience. If anything, Sonic Origins is a good compilation of Sonic games but is a bit pricey for what you get. Adding insult to injury is the fact that the Deluxe Edition locks players out of some bonus items that really should have just belonged to the base game. Still, Sonic Origins is a great time for fans and newcomers alike and is a worthwhile way to experience the adventures of the terrific trio.

Messy as it is, Sonic Origins is still a collection of the best 2D entries the franchise has to offer. It may not be as dense in content in comparison to prior compilations like Sonic Mega Collection or Sonic Gems Collection, but it does just enough to not get in the way of what made these games system sellers in their heyday. While I was hoping for an easy touchdown, this ended up being a fumble recovery instead. Hefty price tag be damned, new players deserve to see why people like me keep going back to what many consider the reason people loved Sonic in the first place.

In almost every way, Sonic Origins is a success, except for where it truly matters – the games themselves. What could have been a fantastic celebration of some of the greatest 16-bit platformers out there is instead a tentative recommendation to new fans and a difficult sell for those who’ve spent decades of their lives running in Sonic’s shoes. I’ve enjoyed my time blasting to the past, but it’s fallen frustratingly short of living up to my memories.

Sonic Origins is a good collection, with a very well implemented job of changing the look of games to something current without leaving them stretched. Still, this mania of always focusing on the same Sonic games in different collections, given that he has a vast list of interesting titles, is starting to get more and more worn out.

Sonic Origins is an overall strong collection of some of Sonic’s best titles. The PS5 version seems pretty bug-free, and the included games all play very smoothly. I wish there was a bit more content in the gallery, and the replaced Sonic 3 songs are disappointing, but otherwise, I’m quite satisfied with Sonic Origins.
