If you aren’t a Batman fan, I’m not sure that there is enough that stands out that dropping full retail on Gotham Knights is a smart move. The game could certainly use some patches, the full four-player mode isn’t out yet at release and I feel like holiday releases may quickly overshadow this game. That isn’t to say that there isn’t a great concept, but like Batman, it's crushed to death under all the debris.

A Batman family that couldn't get out of Arkhamverse's shadow. The game design structured around Co-op shows a lack of motivation. So many problems with monotonous combat, empty Gotham city, insufficient hero abilities, optimization issues and so on. A screenshot of Gotham city from photo-mode is the only thing that comforted me.

Gotham Knights is worth playing for its story and characters, but its RPG stylings feel counterintuitive and clunky compared to the Arkham games.

There’s no denying that Gotham Knights is a sizable disappointment even if it settles into being a decent, yet forgettable, game.

Gotham Knights is a project that could have become a new stage on superhero videogame experiences but became a victim of what Batman's big legacy has already brought to the genre as a game that will inevitably be forgotten and purposely ignored.

Ultimately, I enjoyed Gotham Knights for what it was – a basic superhero game that provides players with plenty to do. It will not live up to the standard of the height of the Batman: Arkham series, but it's still a fun game, especially if you want to just tune out and beat up some nameless thugs. There is plenty of room for improvement in Gotham Knights, but this game provides a solid enough foundation for future installments, and I enjoyed a game that looked at the wider Batman family rather than focusing on just one character.

Gotham Knights features a lot of perplexing changes, and suffers from being a good game fraught with bad decisions. While I think the combat can be sluggish, and the grind is not especially interesting or engaging, it never stopped me from having fun. When the game gets out of its own way, I was having a blast solving crimes and interacting with my favorite villains. It’s these glimmers of greatness that’ll keep its hold on you just long enough to see the credits. This won’t be able to take on the mantle and legacy that Batman: Arkham Knight left behind, but that’s okay, and so is Gotham Knights.

There are some truly fun moments in Gotham Knights. Playing with a friend highlights the very best of what the developers set out to do, and I enjoyed both the story and getting to see Gotham’s protectors outside of Batman grab the spotlight. If the developers had built Gotham Knights around its strengths, it could have been an easy recommendation. As is, you spend so much time in its bland open world that only those who plan to explore it with friends should seriously consider it.

Holy cow Batman! Gotham Knights only memorable thing is having the gut to kill Batman on screen, everything else is a mediocre experience that will make DC fans angry and disappointed.

Living in the shadow of Rocksteady's Arkham series, Gotham Knights can't seem to leave a mark for even the biggest Batman fans. A wave of performance issues only makes the decent combat and terrible traversal worse, and a good story won't help it alone.

Gotham Knights only appeals to die-hard fans of the Gotham universe, even if it does so at the risk of completely disappointing them.

Gotham Knights fails to meet the expectations set by the Arkham series, and even though there is huge potential and material to work with, the end products is subpar in almost every aspect.

Gotham Knights didn't provide anything that surpasses the Arkham Knight games, it has the ideas but it failed with the execution. The performance is also the worst of any current gen exclusive game, it could be worth giving a shot if you are hungry or thirsty for an experience similar to Arkham Knight but that is pretty much it

Drawing from the refined toolkit that powered Batman: Arkham and Marvel's Spider-Man, WB Games Montréal has produced a cookie-cutter superhero experience that's not looking to push any boundaries.

Warner Bros. attempt at getting things going again with Gotham Knights feels largely flat thanks to unwieldy movement and a world that is more "checklist" than immersive, but in small doses it can be fun, and the heroes all feel unique and work well in co-op multiplayer.

Gotham Knights has plenty of great ideas to shake up the Batman formula, but never quite gets them together for an all-star team-up. Instead, it's a forgettable game that will only please the most diehard DC fans.

Despite Gotham Knight's cooperative multiplayer and many customization options, vigilante justice can't save this open-world action-RPG from mediocrity.

Gotham City might never have looked better, but Gotham Knights' gameplay repetition and lack of length to the main narrative might deter all but the most hardcore Batman fans. Co-op adds a fun layer to all the crime fighting, and every character feels truly different from one another, even if the combat system takes some getting used to. Overall, there is a solid core here that hopefully can be built on in the future.

Its colourful cast of characters handles Batman's absence well, but mismatched features and puzzling progression means it trips as much as it triumphs.
