Sega presents us with a great adventure to season the 30th anniversary of the blue porcupine franchise. Sonic Frontiers not only revitalizes the saga, but also presents us with a huge adventure in which, literally, getting lost and research is a delight and whose conclusion will take us between 25 and 30 hours, time that can stretch substantially depending on how much we have explored or lost. A fun and highly recommended adventure for both Sonic fans and those who are not, who as a handicap has that the Switch version is somewhat fair on a graphic level.

Sonic Frontiers is undoubtedly an exciting development for one of gaming’s icons. Running around the open zones never gets old, and if the developers can fill out the combat a little more, they could have a dual-punch threat in a future game that will really be great.

Whatever this game is, it should provide a solid framework for the developers at Sonic Team to take and improve upon in the next Sonic game, whatever that may be.

Sonic Frontiers is a game that involves tolerating some frustration and during which I found myself forcing myself to like it, when even the game itself didn't seem to want it. The concept of open zones for extremely fluid and dynamic gameplay, which grows according to your interaction, is very good and has immense potential, but it often feels like we're playing a beta. Camera problems, extreme pop-in graphics, inconsistent controls, lots of fun little tasks and an exaggeration of mechanics affect the experience. Here is the basis to build a spectacular game.

Sonic Frontiers has done an excellent job of showcasing Sonic's franchise potential in form of an open World game. some Ideas haven't been implemented correctly, but we can be hopeful next games in the franchise would utilize Sonic Potential to its fullest

Sonic Frontiers has some noticeable issues, but it still manages to be the best 3D Sonic entry in years despite this. Players can expect a fresh new take on the franchise featuring plenty of gameplay variety and a somewhat intriguing story. Series fans will love this game and it should be recommended to anyone who is looking for an atmospheric action platformer.

All that said, there’s still a solid-enough idea at the center of Sonic Frontiers that could possibly make for a great game in the future, which is more than could be said of infamous stinkers like Sonic Unleashed or Sonic Lost World. If a sequel could provide players with the same type of freedom that Sonic’s been afforded—and, perhaps, if it could stay in the incubation chamber a little longer until proper gestation—then Sega’s blue hedgehog might get to soar to new heights.

Sonic Frontiers is broken beyond belief with mechanics that barely work and a camera so disastrous it’s literally sickening. The “Open Zones” are disjointed, unpopulated wastelands that do less than nothing to justify their depressing existence. An unpleasant mess, looking and feeling like a mishmash of disparate assets duct taped together, and that’s before we consider the damning amount of recycled content. It’s honestly embarrassing that any professional studio could have made something so cheap, so sad, and so thoroughly incompetent. Even by Sonic Team’s low standards, this is pathetic.

It’s been a long time coming for fans to really step into the shoes of the blue hedgehog. Even though it’s a little rough around the edges, Sonic Frontiers is a huge step in the right direction and is no doubt the premiere Sonic game we’ve been wanting for the longest time. The feeling it gives you is unlike anything that’s come before it. It has to be played to be believed. This game could very well be the beginning of a new age of Sonic games, as its future has never looked brighter. The possibilities are never-ending. Sonic is here, reaching far across these new Frontiers.

It's not a home run, but Sonic Frontiers does so much of the things that really matter so well that it is easily the most fun 3D Sonic has been in years – maybe even decades – and a genuinely fun and engaging game on its own merits.

Sonic Frontiers is the most ambitious game in the franchise, with a Sonic Team in a state of grace and influenced by other open world titles that manage to elevate the blue hedgehog to a new dimension both playable and plot-wise. A tremendously fun, long, replayable and very varied game that will delight all fans of the character.

Sonic Frontiers takes the Hedgehog in an exciting, fulfilling direction. The controls feel cohesive and coherent, the open zone concept is a smart game-changer, with the freedom of exploration coupled with a genuine feeling of enjoyment. It doesn’t always get its choices right, it doesn’t look as crisp as it could and there’s a few things holding it back from being the game it should be. Ultimately, though, the future of the franchise is looking less blurry and more bright!

Probably the best Sonic has been for a while, with open zones that make for scrappy fun and incredible frustration in your hunt for the Chaos Emeralds.

Sonic Frontiers is a welcome surprise in 2022. It brings an engaging pseudo-open world, thrilling combat, and a deeper story than you may expect. Some of the platforming can feel janky for a few moments, and a somewhat lack of fast travel does aggravate, but this is one of the best adventures this hedgehog has been on in years.

Despite a very rough start and many technical issues is Sonic Frontiers a game that we thoroughly enjoyed. It may very well be an odd form of Stockholm syndrome, being enchanted by the cringe-worthy voice acting, the absurd story, all mixed with some of the best gameplay flow the sonic games ever had in the third dimension. As soon as some of the big boss battles hit, the game shows that it’s much more than just a cheap imitation of Breath of the Wild. A full recommendation however isn’t possible with the technical state the game released in. A few patches are desperately needed for fix some of the glitches and underwhelming textures and animations.

Sonic Frontiers may not be the best game released this year, but it is one of the best 3D Sonic titles released in recent memory and should not be missed by fans of the series.

Sonic Frontiers succeeds in finally making Sonic truly work in 3D without many of the problems that plagued past titles. While it's far from perfect and could have used more polish, it's a fairly impressive game that offers up most everything fans could want.

Sonic Frontiers is not a bad game and I’m pretty forgiving when it comes to its issues. You can’t make a series be better without making some risky choices.

For all it gets right, Sonic Frontiers is the right direction that Sonic Team needs to be steering the series towards. The semi open-world template could still use a bit of creative work to give the speedy blue mascot a more suitably whacky playground, but some dull zones don’t hold it back from being a blast to play.

Sonic Frontiers is full of oddities and anomalies, but it has the right ingredients to be a really fun adventure.
