The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure has a lot going for it, but even more holding it back. The story and characters are mostly fantastic, but the game does so much to get in the way of enjoying it both through dialogue and gameplay it becomes hard to recommend to those not already invested in the world.

If you enjoyed Trails from Zero, then The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure is a delightful complement with an even more gripping story. The Crossbell Duology is some of Nihon Falcom’s most compelling work and worth playing if you haven’t yet had the chance.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure is nothing short of an epic RPG story. It's not as good an onboarding point for the greater series as its predecessor Trails From Zero was, but that cost just means bigger ambition with the narrative beats and world explored.  It's worth noting it's not as polished as it should be, showing its age with the lower visual fidelity and framerate dips. However, the priority with NIS America is clearly just getting the game out there. Frankly, what a game it is. Crossbell is as magical as ever and it was a heartfelt joy to experience the second and closing story for the SSS team. You're not getting many experiences as special as this one. I love and will miss you, Crossbell.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure is a fantastic way to cap off the Crossbell storyline, and if you've played Trails from Zero, you're going to have a wonderful time. If you haven't, however, you'd be better off with spending your time there than jumping into its sequel.

This is just the seconda half of the same game played six months ago on the same platform, and, as such, si a solid and perfectly enjoyable old style JRPG with some rough edges and little courage. If you love the saga overall, it cannot be missed.

That being said, I can't overlook the disservice that these types of Switch 2 releases are doing to fans who supported an at-the-time more niche RPG franchise. Yes, the Trails in the Sky FC remake has shone the spotlight on the modern Legend of Heroes titles, but let's throw a bone to the players who were there first. I'll dig my heels in against an all-digital future without upgrade options as we move from one console to the next.

Trails to Azure is one of those games that, when finished, sticks with you for a long time. One of the most fun experiences you can have in a turn-based RPG, this entry is a must-have for all fans of the series and a powerful conclusion to the Crossbell arc. Just keep in mind that, unfortunately, the PS4 version should be avoided if possible.

undefined. It might be tempting to skip Trails to Azure, but even set apart from the exceedingly large franchise it's still another great RPG for the Switch. I'm looking forward to possibly replaying it with more knowledge of the events and try to take on more of the side content, since I had to take a hard critical path to get the review done. If I don't decide to fill in some of those Trails story gaps this spring….

If you enjoyed Trails from Zero then naturally, The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure should be next on your list of games to play. With its familiar world, cast of characters, and gameplay albeit with a few minor twists; this is one epic RPG that you're sure to love.

What makes the early chapters of the series enjoyable, despite being heavily characterized by seemingly endless walls of text, is their simple and intuitive gameplay. Already well established in Sky and given a slight overhaul in Zero, Azure essentially fine-tunes the mechanics that players have come to know and love.

it's not necessarily the best entry point in the series for new players, but it's a satisfying conclusion to that arc for fans, and it's a darn good RPG altogether.
