GrimGrimoire OnceMore is a tower defense with an incredible artwork. Despite being a PlayStation 2 game, it looks great thanks to the facelift of this edition.

GrimGrimoire OnceMore is a perfect entry point for all the newcomers of the genre, given its light structure and small arenas, but it also offers a decent challenge in its later stages. It's beauty is undeniable even sixteen years after its original release, but on Switch there are much better choices.

Except for the fascinating artistic component, which from that distant 2007 would have become the trademark of Vanillaware, GrimGrimoire OnceMore is an imperfect product and not exactly up to the fame that the Japanese developer enjoys today, also because the reissue has preserved most of the defects detected in the original.

I mostly enjoyed GrimGrimoire OnceMore and it still looks lovely but at the same time, its gameplay isn't all that involving, especially after you master the basics which doesn't take all that long.

GrimGrimoire OnceMore takes one of the most under-appreciated RTS games of its generation and fixes some of its biggest problems, making this a worthwhile game for both new fans and those who have played the original. While the repetitive maps mean that most levels feel too similar to each other, the story is fun and the visuals have had a solid upgrade for the Switch. There is just enough depth to the strategy to keep you guessing without overwhelming new players.

GrimGrimoire OnceMore offers tower defense and RTS fans a level of learning and resource management that engages without ever hitting overload. It's not my favorite tower defense game, but the quality artwork, interesting story, and solid gameplay should have genre fans (and fans of the original version) pleased with its Switch release.

The gameplay is a bit of a learning curve, but once it clicks, it’s addictive. Battles move at a brisk pace and challenge the player to be constantly aware of what is happening in every corner of the map.

Despite its specific issues, it's possible to consider GrimGrimoire OnceMore a very capable representative of its genre, but, even so, it's hardly inviting for the general public. Even so, this is a respectable entry in Vanillaware's catalogue.

Once More is a gorgeous game with a strong story and a lot of depth, it just drops you into the deep end quickly.

Vertical 2D battles in a giant tower are a great USP, but GrimGrimoire can’t reach the pinnacle with a battle system more bloated and complex than fun. Vanillaware’s beautiful signature artwork and clever narratives are as ageless now as they were back in 2007, but some design choices leave a bitter aftertaste.

GrimGrimoire OnceMore is a mix of a visual novel broken up by RTS battles. I went into GrimGrimoire OnceMore without knowing whether I would like the game or not! You see, the visual novel’s gameplay style isn’t my thing. However, I fell in love with the game, but it is not a title for everyone. Though if you’re in the mood for a clever strategy game that is fun and features battles and beautiful artwork and scenes, and a good story, then GrimGrimoire OnceMore definitely is recommended.

While GrimGrimoire OnceMore may overwhelm players with its numerous mechanics and lack of narrative freedom, it also offers a vibrant glimpse into Vanillaware's roots.

Grimgrimoire OnceMore will allow us to enjoy Vanillaware's debut, a studio that has brought us authentic works of art, especially on an artistic level, such as Odin's Sphere, Dragon's Crown or the recent and magnificent 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim . This case is no exception, since it is noticeable that, despite the simplicity of its mechanics, it is a game that has its own charm and a certain magic that traps the player, encouraging him to reveal its secrets and unravel its plot. A fun adventure whose conclusion is around 15 hours, depending on how skilled we are, and whose difficulty will oscillate between very simple combats and real nightmares, which will force us to lower the difficulty or fill the skill tree to advance. A highly recommended game, especially for strategy lovers, with a lot of personal charm and charisma.
