Like squeezing blood from a stone, The Outlast Trials is a repetitive chore that features monotonous searches and running laps through mazes until there is nothing left but pain and the option to share the misery with others.

The Outlast Trials is a fun multiplayer fright-fest that’ll keep players on the edge of their seat, but it doesn’t always play to the strengths of the Outlast series. Don’t get me wrong, it still offers a bloody scary good time, but the more predictable gameplay loop and iffy enemy AI can make the experience feel a bit tame when compared to the horrific thrills seen in the mainline titles. But hey, with six trials to play through, plenty of challenges to conquer, and a whole host of gruesome tasks to complete, there’s plenty here to keep fans invested in The Outlast Trials’ multiplayer scares.

The Outlast Trials can give you several hours of entertainment with your friends, while played alone it is far too unbalanced and frustrating. Unfortunately, after several hours the repetitiveness of the missions starts to become noticeable, and even in co-op it starts to become a bit tiresome.

The Outlast Trials maintains the essence of its predecessor with frequent chases by grotesque foes. COOP mode, though less terrifying, offers its own intense, disgusting encounters. Despite the engaging gameplay, the game lacks sufficient missions even after its full release, leaving players hoping for ongoing updates to enjoy its chaotic madness fully.

Although it can be played solo, surviving The Outlast Trials is better and more fun with friends, although they’ll need pretty strong stomachs and a taste for extreme imagery. The Outlast Trials has strong survival puzzle mechanics, a good bit of macabre humor, and a confidently over-the-top presentation. It’ll need some additional content over time for real longevity, but the foundation is strong.

Experience the harsh trials together with other players and try not to go mad. Outlast is still scary and engaging.

The Outlast Trials is a fun coop game with friends (you can play alone as well). But there doesn't seem to be much in the way of content. The main maps are great with having the players do various objectives, but I found the MK Challenges tedious and lame.

All in all I expected more from this horror game. My nephew has raved about how good the first two were and even though this has been in EA on PC for years I was eagerly awaiting the console release. Sadly, The Outlast Trials just didn’t live up to the hype for me. With monsters that didn’t really feel scary, and maps and objectives that just start to feel repetitive really quickly, I can really only recommend this one for the real Outlast fans.

The Outlast Trials is in better shape now it's out of Early Access, and while AI and fixes have been made, it's still light on content.

The Outlast Trials is an amazing addition to the Outlast franchise. While not a completely tonal sequel, although it could be if you chose to play the trials alone, the heart and soul of the first game and DLC in particular are all over this one. The enemies are terrifying and the additions to the gameplay all work perfectly with the great bones of what was already there. This game is worth playing every time, especially if you can get a team together.

The Outlast Trials is a prime example of how horror can work in a cooperative setting with its downright disturbing series of events, shocking endings, and horrific antagonists. It’s an easy game for me to recommend with the disclaimer that your mileage is going to vary depending on who and how many players you have available to you. My best runs were over a mic with a few beers in hand alongside friends whom I could revel in victory with and laugh at failure as we figured out the mechanics together, while the worst were with some randoms who didn’t want to participate or lacked the communication skills to truly make the best aspects of the game shine.

Outlast Trials is a horror game that misses the shelf with his jump scares. It still feels terrible and powerless when you are chased. The game quickly loses its charm on your own, but certainly offers pleasure with some friends. A great game to have played together.

The Outlast Trials is a great multiplayer horror game that retains the thrills and chills of previous Outlast games while adding some light-heartedness when playing with friends.
